A Great Primer on 802.11n

Several months ago, I started on a project that required me to be able to dig into low-level 802.11n device driver code and understand how it worked. I knew nothing about 802.11 at the time, and it quickly became apparent that the 802.11 standards documents were not written with the neophyte in mind. I looked around for books to get me started, but most were focused on network design and implementation, and they weren't much help in understanding the frame-by-frame details.

Then I found this book.

Perahia and Stacey provide a lucid introduction to the structure of 802.11n (and ac). They focus on the improvements in the more recent "n" and "ac" amendments, but they give enough 802.11 a/b/g background to avoid leaving anyone behind. Most valuable of all, they explain the motivation behind many decisions made in the standardization process--which offers a whole new layer of insight into why 802.11 works as it does.

The book has separate sections on the physical and MAC layers, and each is self-contained. The prose is both concise and understandable, which means you don't have to set aside days of reading to get what you need. All-in-all, this is one of the most well-written technical books I have come across.

Of course, if you need to work with 802.11n on an implementation level, you'll eventually have to dive into the standards documents themselves, but if you take the time to read this book first, you'll save yourself hours of piecing together details from disparate sections (and documents) to answer what you thought was a simple question.

Excellent technical description of 802.11 standard

This book is an excellent description of the 802.11 standard physical layer and mac design as well as deployment issues. The book provides adequate detail so the reader can understand what the 802.11 standard contains and how one can design a network with 802.11, enhance the standard, or implement an ASIC or software for 802.11. The book also contains some implementation related discussions which can be very useful to those interested in implementing the standard in ASICs or products. The authors are obviously quite technical and have also participated in the 802.11 standard for years which allowed them not only to provide a very high quality description of the standard but also the history and rationale behind the design. I learned enormously from this book and thank the authors for their contribution.

Great read for both gurus and newbies

Perahia and Stacey have a very straight forward way of writing and get right to the meat of what you need to know to understand and use WLAN effectively, or to create your own implementations. The book contains all the technical details you need to understand the IEEE 802.11 standards (which on their own can be a little cryptic if you are not a regular at IEEE meetings). In addition to being a great reference book, you will also find history and reasons for choices made in the standard. There are lots of practical information about how features are commonly used, recommended practices, features that are not commonly used (hint: you don't have to learn all 3000+ pages of the latest WLAN standard!). This is the book I wished I've had when I started designing WLAN systems. Now with several years of experience under my belt I still find this book an invaluable companion in my work. You will find solid analysis and explanations of RF, Phy and MAC layer protocols and you will find detailed information about all the new features for enhanced robustness and throughput, such as MU-MIMO, aggregation and beamforming. I would highly recommend this book for every systems, hardware, RF or software engineer that needs a deeper understanding of WLAN!

Very good instructional manual and study guide

A very good study of Proverbs. It emphasizes scripture study and cross references with scriptures in other parts of the Bible. It also uses commentary and good questions to tie it all together. I bought this for teaching a women's Bible study at my church. I plan on using more of the studies in the future.

About the Author
Guy Cook is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading. He has worked as an EFL teacher in Egypt, Italy, the UK, and Russia, as a lecturer at the University of Leeds, and as head of TESOL at the London University Institute of Education. He has been an invited speaker at universities and major conferences in many countries, and has published widely on discourse analysis, the theory and practice of language teaching, literature teaching, translation, and language play.

The sharpest tool in the shed

This book is a breath of fresh air in a thoroughly moribund field. In fact, it goes a long way in explaining why the field is moribund: the sharpest tool in the shed has been neglected for over one hundred years.

English Language Teaching needs translation tasks to deliver on its promises with regard to interaction as a way of pushing the interlanguage. However, the establishment needs to promote monolingual approaches or risk irrelevance and collapse. The result is a field dedicated to a sham. Cook suggests, rather convincingly, that the edifice could come crashing down. It's not clear whether this is true, but it's an interesting idea.

The need for the use of students' language in communicative language teaching explains why ELT fails in local contexts. It explains why the establishment fails to make any methodological recommendations for local contexts. It explains why ELT continues to be perceived as ethnocentric and colonialist.

It explains the lie at the heart of ELT: teachers don't need the skills (bilingual ability) that they are trying to develop in their students. Of course not!?!

Another Hit by Debra Holland!

This story starts with an “edge of your seat”, “what’s going to happen next”. I absolutely couldn’t put this book down.

It starts with Antonia having to physically bury her husband who has been killed by a bear. She has a baby she is still nursing as well as a six year old. You can feel this woman’s pain at having to say goodbye to the man she loves and still be strong for her children. She is out on the prairie all alone not knowing what she is going to do. She finally decides to go into the town of Sweetwater Springs where she is helped by the minister and his wife in a way she didn’t see coming.

In the meantime Erik is frantically trying to save his wife who has been in labor for hours and hours. So here you find yourself on another roller coaster of emotion for this family. Daisy, his wife, dies after giving birth to a baby daughter, Camilla. Erik is desperate for help for his daughter. He just can’t lose her too. The minister and some other families in town also help him in such a surprising way. It is suggested that in order to save his daughter as she needs a woman who can nurse her and to help Antonia and her boys, that the two of them get married. They are both shocked at such a suggestion.

This is a story of a second chance at love for sure but before Antonia and Erik can find that again they to go through such pain because of their loss and then the guilt of possibly having a life of happiness once again.

This is a beautiful story of two people becoming a family out of necessity but staying together out of a newfound love for each other and their children. Debra Holland has done it again with another tears and laughter visit to Sweetwater Springs and its wonderful characters.

Debra Holland has done it again!! Love Sweetwater springs!!

It was so great to get back to Sweetwater Springs. Seeing all the families and seeing how the town is growing makes me want to live there! Look forward to every book Debra Holland writes!!

In this story we meet Erik and Antonia. Two souls brought together in dire circumstances. Antonia losing her trapper husband leaving her with two growing boys, and Erik losing his wife in childbirth leaving him with a daughter born too early.

This was a great story of overcoming hardships and brokenheartedness to meld into a growing and contented family. The struggles Erik and Antonia face becoming familiar with one another and learning how to become a spouse to a virtual stranger was enlightening, knowing that this was how many families came about years ago. The details and research put into each aspect of the story really drew me in and I felt all the emotion and sorrow they were feeling. Once again another fantastic Sweetwater Springs story and I can't wait for the next!!

The Best 5++

Debra Holland writes with such emotional intensity and yet realistic clarity. At the same time you feel as if you have stepped back in time to join her characters. Healing Montana Sky showcases her exceptional ability to do this. Antonia and Erik’s story is a realistic take on why someone would marry for convenience. It is not a contrived need to find a mate for monetary enrichment like so many stories that I have seen, but one that I can see really happening.

I loved this story and there really is much to love in the way this novel is written. Life has not been kind to Antonia and Erik when the story begins. Still I think I would have not like a sentimentalized version of their situations. Conversely this story has an honest authentic compassionate way with the telling of their losses and struggles. The decision to marry is met with resistant just like a grieving spouse would do. This is just one way that the characters are completely fleshed showing them as multidimensional. Then the meshing of their different backgrounds and perspectives progresses in a believable way. What is most astounding is that while the tone is serious the mood stays optimistic. I never once doubted that they would stay strong and stay together.

This is one of the best historical western stories I have read in a very long time if ever. The secondary story concerning the Indians is just as compelling as Antonia’s, Erik’s and their small children’s. The only way this story could be improved is if Debra Holland promises to tell Henri’s, Jacques’ and Camilla’s story once they are grown.

John Eynon BA BArch RIBA MAPM FCIOB CEnv is an enabler, writer and speaker, qualified as an Architect in 1981, and has worked in the public and private sectors in architectural practice, main contracting and consulting. For the last 15 years John has been involved in design management and pre-construction process for major contractors, with responsibility for design management teams and also providing functional support and design leadership at all stages of the design and construction process. He now provides BIM consultancy, design management and work winning services through his company Open Water Consulting Ltd.

A huge disappointment, is very outdated material.

I just took part II today! Rudman's book is not "new" in any sense. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone, unless you plan to travel back to 1986 to take the test!

good for last minute review

If you are looking for a book to learn the material covered on part two, this is not the book. But if you are willing to memorize every exam in this book the week before you take it, this book will prove to be very helpful. The questions were very similar and some were exactly word for word (on the computer test version, I dont know about the paper test version). my suggestion would be to study the way you normally would and the week before memorize every test in this book especially the pharm, oral surgey, oral medicine section. keep in my that you want to make sure you have the latest ADA guidlines on premedication to make sure the info is updated. The book may not get you the higest possible score but it may be the diffrence between passing and failing.Basically if you are caught in a jam and did not prepare and only have a week before the test this is the book.

But the old information actually lays a good foundation for the principles of the new information. This book does help make the difference between passing and failing. It really helps with learning to eliminate the distractors even if you have no idea what the question is asking for or what the answer choices are.
