A hysterical hit by Adam Matcho!
By Christopher Carrolli
Adam Matcho sells sex toys, beer-bongs, and fart-bombs—at least, he used to. Now, he writes hysterical memoirs of his days as the top employee at a well-known novelty shop, infamous in the Pittsburgh area for its naughty merchandise. From his work station near the store’s entrance, he watches shoppers lumber through the Monroeville Mall like the zombies in Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead.” His customers are strange people purchasing odd items; his coworkers are a mix of funny, unique, and annoying; his boss, he never sees. Now in his third attempt at college, his life is a whirlwind both personally and professionally, and centered amid the irony of this comical setting.
In his second book, “The Novelty Essays;” Matcho, a Washington township resident originally from Johnstown, writes of his oddest job and being a full-time college student living in the working-class humdrum of western Pennsylvania. But in the book, Matcho is not just a hard worker and a striving student; he’s also a young husband and father, eking out a sparse income while living in two rooms with his wife and child in his in-laws’ home. Through it all, Matcho is consistent about two things: wanting a home that he, his wife, and their son can call their own, and wanting to be a writer, but not just any writer, a Pittsburgh writer.
“In fact, that’s all I wanted,” Matcho writes. “I wanted the world to let me be a writer. A writer from Pittsburgh…All I wanted to be was a Pittsburgh writer who made enough money to not have a day job. I wanted to focus all my free time on novels and poems and essays.”
And Matcho’s essays are extraordinary compositions, placing the reader comfortably within the scene. The writing is smooth and unhindered, making the reader forget that he or she is reading an essay. His work is humbly titled with the word ‘essays,’ as opposed to the vivid and compelling memoir that it is. It’s a memoir where the laughs are hysterical, and the woes are heartbreaking.
He is a good guy, the type that picks up hitchhikers needing a ride during a snowstorm, the type that works twelve hour days to put Christmas gifts under the tree for his son and wife, including “picking up” a couple extra gifts from the store where he works. The store is as fun as it looks, prompting consistent laughs from beginning to end, ranging from a swinging couple who purchase a “Pocket Rocket,” his coworker’s acute description of his girlfriend’s vagina, and an elderly couple who want to purchase “preferably Catholic bling” for their grandson. All of it takes place between backroom bong hits and swigs of Jamaican rum.
Then there comes the moment when the two rooms of his life, three counting the store, begin to close in on him. He feels overwhelmed and trapped, as though he hasn’t lived. In a sudden and unexpected twist, Matcho decides to walk out on his life.
“I needed time,” he writes. “I needed to have conversations deeper than ‘How s***ty was your day at work?’ I needed to experience life to write about life and so far my life had consisted of work and responsibility and last time I checked nobody wants to read about that. It’s called life and it ends the same every time. You die.”
The heartbreak is heavy as the book takes a serious turn; it is dramatic, well-chronicled, and poignant. Yet the conclusion is not one as serious as death as Matcho had philosophized. It is one of realization, great epiphany, and a coming of age brilliantly penned by its author. “The Novelty Essays” provokes laughter, sorrow, and has put Adam Matcho on the fast track to success as an author of the memoir.

Truly, the working poor.
By Luthercosmo
This guy nails it...a spot we have all been in: overworking an underpaying job. Trying to make ends meet, spend a little time with your family, while treading the waters of sanity....Adam Matcho is a candle in today's night.
