Twice flunked out of college, Adam Matcho -- newly married and newly a father -- finds himself in school again, rushing to classes between shifts at a novelty store. In here, the weird have turned capitalist. Customers need goods. Adam needs work. He needs a degree to get a better job, but the hours are endless and the pay not enough. Only Adam Matcho could make us laugh at a world that wants us to be zombies in a George Romero film. Deeper than the news but just as current, THE NOVELTY ESSAYS reveal how we work, what those hours do, and how a story can save us all. "Adam Matcho has more talent than most corporations have profits, and his vision of America is tragic and brilliant and hilarious." -- Dave Newman, author of TWO SMALL BIRDS and more

A hysterical hit by Adam Matcho!
By Christopher Carrolli
Adam Matcho sells sex toys, beer-bongs, and fart-bombs—at least, he used to. Now, he writes hysterical memoirs of his days as the top employee at a well-known novelty shop, infamous in the Pittsburgh area for its naughty merchandise. From his work station near the store’s entrance, he watches shoppers lumber through the Monroeville Mall like the zombies in Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead.” His customers are strange people purchasing odd items; his coworkers are a mix of funny, unique, and annoying; his boss, he never sees. Now in his third attempt at college, his life is a whirlwind both personally and professionally, and centered amid the irony of this comical setting.
In his second book, “The Novelty Essays;” Matcho, a Washington township resident originally from Johnstown, writes of his oddest job and being a full-time college student living in the working-class humdrum of western Pennsylvania. But in the book, Matcho is not just a hard worker and a striving student; he’s also a young husband and father, eking out a sparse income while living in two rooms with his wife and child in his in-laws’ home. Through it all, Matcho is consistent about two things: wanting a home that he, his wife, and their son can call their own, and wanting to be a writer, but not just any writer, a Pittsburgh writer.
“In fact, that’s all I wanted,” Matcho writes. “I wanted the world to let me be a writer. A writer from Pittsburgh…All I wanted to be was a Pittsburgh writer who made enough money to not have a day job. I wanted to focus all my free time on novels and poems and essays.”
And Matcho’s essays are extraordinary compositions, placing the reader comfortably within the scene. The writing is smooth and unhindered, making the reader forget that he or she is reading an essay. His work is humbly titled with the word ‘essays,’ as opposed to the vivid and compelling memoir that it is. It’s a memoir where the laughs are hysterical, and the woes are heartbreaking.
He is a good guy, the type that picks up hitchhikers needing a ride during a snowstorm, the type that works twelve hour days to put Christmas gifts under the tree for his son and wife, including “picking up” a couple extra gifts from the store where he works. The store is as fun as it looks, prompting consistent laughs from beginning to end, ranging from a swinging couple who purchase a “Pocket Rocket,” his coworker’s acute description of his girlfriend’s vagina, and an elderly couple who want to purchase “preferably Catholic bling” for their grandson. All of it takes place between backroom bong hits and swigs of Jamaican rum.
Then there comes the moment when the two rooms of his life, three counting the store, begin to close in on him. He feels overwhelmed and trapped, as though he hasn’t lived. In a sudden and unexpected twist, Matcho decides to walk out on his life.
“I needed time,” he writes. “I needed to have conversations deeper than ‘How s***ty was your day at work?’ I needed to experience life to write about life and so far my life had consisted of work and responsibility and last time I checked nobody wants to read about that. It’s called life and it ends the same every time. You die.”
The heartbreak is heavy as the book takes a serious turn; it is dramatic, well-chronicled, and poignant. Yet the conclusion is not one as serious as death as Matcho had philosophized. It is one of realization, great epiphany, and a coming of age brilliantly penned by its author. “The Novelty Essays” provokes laughter, sorrow, and has put Adam Matcho on the fast track to success as an author of the memoir.

Truly, the working poor.
By Luthercosmo
This guy nails it...a spot we have all been in: overworking an underpaying job. Trying to make ends meet, spend a little time with your family, while treading the waters of sanity....Adam Matcho is a candle in today's night.

Stochastic Calculus: Applications in Science and Engineering, by Mircea Grigoriu

Algebraic, differential, and integral equations are used in the applied sciences, en gineering, economics, and the social sciences to characterize the current state of a physical, economic, or social system and forecast its evolution in time. Generally, the coefficients of and/or the input to these equations are not precisely known be cause of insufficient information, limited understanding of some underlying phe nomena, and inherent randonmess. For example, the orientation of the atomic lattice in the grains of a polycrystal varies randomly from grain to grain, the spa tial distribution of a phase of a composite material is not known precisely for a particular specimen, bone properties needed to develop reliable artificial joints vary significantly with individual and age, forces acting on a plane from takeoff to landing depend in a complex manner on the environmental conditions and flight pattern, and stock prices and their evolution in time depend on a large number of factors that cannot be described by deterministic models. Problems that can be defined by algebraic, differential, and integral equations with random coefficients and/or input are referred to as stochastic problems. The main objective of this book is the solution of stochastic problems, that is, the determination of the probability law, moments, and/or other probabilistic properties of the state of a physical, economic, or social system. It is assumed that the operators and inputs defining a stochastic problem are specified.

Review

"When familiar at least with the basics of measure theoretic probability, one may use this book to get a feel for the type of problems one tackles with the given methods and the type of results one can expect and then proceed to more detailed expositions.... The book is an impressive achievement." ―Mathematical Reviews

"The large number of examples...as well as the good survey on advanced mathematical techniques make the textbook very valuable for people working in mathematics with a view towards applications.... The applications range from climate dynamics over material sciences and mechanics to pattern formation, physics and finance. The presentation is very successful in providing a sound mathematical background without getting lost in too much technical detail. Most results are proved completely, for the others the main ideas and intuition are given and references for detailed expositions are given.... At the end of each chapter a list of instructive exercises is provided. The long list of references covers theoretical mathematical works as well as highly applied areas. Altogether this textbook has all the necessary prerequisites for boosting the interdisciplinary collaboration between applied scientists and probabilists." ―Zentralblatt Math

"This is an impressive compendium, which, on its first 280 pages, provides a quite thorough review of probability theory, stochastic processes, It’s formula and stochastic differential equations.... Although the focus is on the mathematical theory, many examples from sciences or engineering illustrate the concepts and methods. Each chapter ends with a number of problems. This book will be of substantial interest to the applied scientists seeking methods to solve stochastic problems." ―Monatshefte fr Mathematik

From the Back Cover

This work focuses on analyzing and presenting solutions for a wide range of stochastic problems that are encountered in applied mathematics, probability, physics, engineering, finance, and economics. The approach used reduces the gap between the mathematical and engineering literature. Stochastic problems are defined by algebraic, differential or integral equations with random coefficients and/or input. However, it is the type, rather than the particular field of application, that is used to categorize these problems.

An introductory chapter outlines the types of stochastic problems under consideration in this book and illustrates some of their applications. A user friendly, systematic exposition unfolds as follows: The essentials of probability theory, random processes, stochastic integration, and Monte Carlo simulation are developed in chapters 2--5. The Monte Carlo method is used extensively to illustrate difficult theoretical concepts and solve numerically some of the stochastic problems in chapters 6--9.

Key features:

* Computational skills developed as needed to solve realistic stochastic problems

* Classical mathematical notation used, and essential theoretical facts boxed

* Numerous examples from applied sciences and engineering

* Complete proofs given; if too technical, notes clarify the idea and/or main steps

* Problems at the end of each chapter reinforce applications; hints given.

* Good bibliography at the end of every chapter

* Comprehensive index

This work is unique, self-contained, and far from a collection of facts and formulas. The analytical and numerical methods approach for solving stochastic problems may be used for self-study by a variety of researchers, and in the classroom by first year graduate students.

Very dense. Proof-oriented. Excellent use of measure theory.
By Alexander C. Zorach
This book is a lot denser than the pretty picture on the cover and the presence of occasional graphs would lead you to expect. It's like 2-3 difficult graduate courses and a bunch of more advanced material for reference all crammed into one place.

The exercises are mostly proof-oriented and would be good preparation for someone looking to do research in this field. I find this book doesn't exactly fit its subtitle of "Applications in Science and Engineering". It is primarily a mathematics book that acknowledges and sometimes discusses applications as motivation for the material. I think it would be more useful to a mathematician than to an engineer or scientist.

My favorite aspect of the book is its no-nonsense treatment of measure-theoretic probability. The book presents the bare minimum necessary for its use, and leaves out some inessential proofs (giving references). I think this is a great way to learn measure theory: first develop an intuitive sense of it and an appreciation of its usefulness, and then you can go back and learn it rigorously from another book. The book provides enough background that you don't need to look elsewhere in order to understand the measure theory used in the text.

I've found a few mistakes in the book, which I find annoying, because I would not trust myself to catch any mistakes beyond maybe chapter 3.

Overall though, I think this is an excellent book. It is about as clear as you can get on the material it covers without watering it down. Lastly, this book covers so much material, most people will not be able to exhaust its contents, and will find it useful as a reference.

After Capitalism (New Critical Theory), by David Schweickart

Since first published in 2002, After Capitalism has offered students and political activists alike a coherent vision of a viable and desirable alternative to capitalism. David Schweickart calls this system Economic Democracy, a successor-system to capitalism which preserves the efficiency strengths of a market economy while extending democracy to the workplace and to the structures of investment finance. In the second edition, Schweickart recognizes that increased globalization of companies has created greater than ever interdependent economies and the debate about the desirability of entrepreneurship is escalating. The new edition includes a new preface, completely updated data, reorganized chapters, and new sections on the economic instability of capitalism, the current economic crisis, and China. Drawing on both theoretical and empirical research, Schweickart shows how and why this model is efficient, dynamic, and applicable in the world today.

Review
Over some 30 years, Schweickart (Loyola Univ. Chicago) has defended and developed a vision of a democratic market socialism as a viable alternative to capitalism. With PhDs in both mathematics and philosophy, Schweickart has the tools to critically evaluate relevant arguments, both economic and ethical. In the first edition of After Capitalism (2002), Schweickart sought to present his case in a manner accessible to a general audience and to academic specialists. The second edition remains accessible to a general audience, but adds valuable discussions on the instability of capitalism, the current global crisis, different responses to this crisis in different parts of the world, and what may be an emerging Chinese version of market socialism. As in his earlier works, Schweickart writes with vigor and clarity. He has a gift for presenting abstract and complex material in a way that nonspecialist readers can understand. Readers who finish this book not yet ready to embrace Schweickart's vision for the future nonetheless will have a much richer understanding of the current crisis, the underlying causes of the crisis, and alternative possibilities. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

Schweikart’s book After Capitalism is an imaginative handbook for creating a socialist American society that succeeds capitalism. It describes in down-to-earth detail a replacement for capitalism that he calls "economic democracy” and how we can bring it about. The book is an entertaining and informative tour de force, with a lot of careful thought behind it. Only reading it can do justice to its complexity. (The Bloomington Alternative)

For anybody who thinks that capitalism leads to economic and moral catastrophe David Schweickart’s book is a formidable critique of capitalism and an excellent exposition of economic democracy as a new mode of production which may supersede the system in which we live. After Capitalism is a book full of hope for the critics of capitalism and a book which must be read by all socialists. It shows that there is a valuable alternative to capitalism and argues that the labour managed firm is better that the capitalistic one for a number of reasons, all of great importance. A system of democratic firms is the realization of socialism according to a marxist vision and, after the breakdown of central planning in Eastern Europe, may contribute to the revival of marxism in a new democratic form. After capitalism is an accessible book for students and anybody who is interested in politics and explains also the way we may follow to realize the new system. (Bruno Jossa, University of Naples)

David Schweickart's After Capitalism is both visionary and practical. Lucidly written, its serves well in the college classroom or in a discussion group of workers wanting to know what socialism is all about (I've tried it, and they loved it!). This new addition enhances the first by dealing with the current meltdown, and offering an alternative to all concerned with winning the battles for democracy. It's simply the best modern book on the topic. (Carl Davidson, Steelworkers Associates and National Co-Chair of Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism)

By far the most sophisticated, detailed and illuminating book yet to appear on a new vision for 21st century socialism. Must reading for anyone serious about building a meaningful progressive future. (Gar Alperovitz, author of America Beyond Capitalism)

Any revolutionary movement has to contend with three cardinal questions: What's wrong with the present system? What does a worthy successor look like? And how do we get there? After Capitalism by David Schweickart provides clear and compelling answers to all three, delivered in a wonderfully engaging and understandable style. If you've ever wondered whether we can do better than capitalism, read this book! (J. Todd Wilson, California State University)

About the Author
David Schweickart is a professor of philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. He holds doctorate degrees in both mathematics and philosophy. He is the author of Capitalism or Worker Control and articles on social, political, and economic philosophy. His work has been translated into French, Spanish, Catalan, and Chinese.

Economic democracy is only a theory on paper but the substance of the model is made so clear in "After Capitalism" you can almost perfectly imagine what the system would look like fully implemented. Schweickart breaks his theory into several important points:

Worker self management. Using evidence from numerous scholars the book looks at the merits of having a macro econ. policy based on workers coops. Staying balanced with studies done by pro-coop Princeton economist and a critic of the Mondragon coop in Spain, he offers more than enough empirical evidence to come to a clear conclusion: Worker's coops are just as efficient, if not more so, as their privately owned counter-parts. Efficiency is only one plus of the coop though. The author digs deep to explore coop's relation to future business expansion, employment, and profit sharing.

Social control of investment is the next major characteristic of E.D. All workers coop's are charged a flat tax that is diverted into a national investment fund. These funds are then transferred back to communities (on a per capita basis) through regional and local public banks. Banks then give grants to coops creating "profitable employment" and to groups of individuals who intend to start new coops. This is a weighty concept and I would read it with a pen and pad in hand. However, at the end of chapter three you will be well versed in the financial markets replacement and ready to defend the proposition if you so chose.

The last major tenet of E.D. involves the market itself. Unlike the USSR or decentralized econ. planning schemes E.D. keeps the consumer market intact. He defends this stance well and shows how a consumer market can be a powerful aspect of a socialist system.

The book also covers "socialist protectionism" to be practiced in place of free trade, a blueprint of reforms to move towards E.D., and ways to keep the average Joe's money safe in the transcending of capitalism. Much of the book is spent dismantling capitalism's contradictions and short comings. If you have free market sympathies be prepared to be challenged. I can not do the book justice in this short review but I suggest this book to all realms of the political spectrum. It will present a challenge to those on the right and make some new debates on the left. I am now a firm advocate of many of Schweickart's theories.

Must-Read For All Socialists/Leftists
By HollyM
This is just an excellent book. Schweikart's writing is clear and intelligent. His arguments are logical and persuasive. His analysis of the problems of modern capitalism is devastating, and his model of Economic Democracy is thorough, utterly appealing, and quite feasible. This was the most enjoyable socialist book I have read in years.

Review
Praise for Rachel E. Carter's bestsellingThe Black Mageseries:

"It takes a lot for me to truly fall in love with a book. I think I maybe do this once or twice a year. This is one of those times. I found a new fantasy story that sucked me in (completely). Imagine my surprise that it was YA too. Y'all know me. Normally, I go for the NA and above reads. But this series...it just has that something "extra". That extra punch that drags you in and won't let go. I hope you give it a try. It's THAT good." -Scarlett Dawn, NYT & USA Today bestselling author of Forever Evermore

"A magical academy where potential mages train and study all things magic, a love-hate relationship with an arrogant prince, and a determined and unyielding female heroine? Sign me up." -Raisa Santos - TheFandom.Net

"Falling somewhere between the magic of Hogwarts and the excitement of Hunger Games, this story resides in the niche rather nicely!"-Margaret Faria - InD'Tale Magazine

"This has undoubtedly become one of my favorite YA fantasy series. Hands down, no competition."-Melissa, EverSoMela, top Goodreads reviewer

"Rachel E. Carter has a definite fan in me forever, keep doing what you're doing Rachel because you write an amazing story!"-Emmeline, The Book Herald, top Amazon reviewer

Worth reading!
By Kay
Before I start the review, I have to say something. I binge-read this book in less than four hours. When I downloaded the ebook to my Kindle, I told myself that I would read ONE chapter and then read some more tomorrow morning before I had to go to college. I cracked open the book (or ebook) and began reading. Immediately the book started out strong. Within one chapter, I was already hooked. I couldn't stop reading. I told myself that I needed to go to sleep, that it was already ten p.m. and I had classes at 9, but my eyes were glued to my Kindle. Hours later, at 1:30 a.m., I finished First Year. And although I was bleary-eyed and evil to everyone I saw due to lack of sleep the following morning, I don't regret it. First Year was really good. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to read it!

The plot of the story- young adult training in the Academy to hone their magical abilities and secure their futures- reminds me a lot of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series. Luckily, while it does have some qualities that Hogwarts had, the Academy is MUCH different. Hogwarts seems like rainbows and unicorns compared to the Academy. With that said, I love Hogwarts. But, still, the Academy is so much rougher than Hogwarts. Hogwarts seems like a mythical haven to some, or even a magical getaway for others. But the Academy? I wouldn't want to step a foot inside that place. The Academy is not a vacation. The Academy only accepts the strongest of will, strength, and power. If you're weak, you won't last. This place isn't fun and games. It's challenging. It's rough. It reminds me of prison or boot camp... or both meshed together. Be that it may, I really liked the Academy. While it's not somewhere I would go, I did enjoy reading about it. It leads to a great story line. In fact, I'm glad that it was tough. If it hadn't, I probably wouldn't have liked this as much as I did.

This brings me to the characters. Because the Academy is so demanding, there has to be tough characters. There's no room for boring, weak, or annoying characters. These people need to be intense, strong, and determined. I'm glad that the author agreed with me on this. The main characters were worthy to be at the Academy. Not all of them were the best in the class, but they never stopped trying. Never. Especially Ryiah.

The characters:

Ryiah, or Ry, is one of the strongest young women I've seen in a YA novel in a long time. She wasn't nearly the best at any of the classes she had to take at the Academy, but she always tried! She worked really hard to make it to where she was at the end of the book, and I admire her for that. While she might not be the best when it comes to magic, she showed the most determination out of all of them. Personally, I'm glad that she wasn't able to hone into her magic abilities easily. I like it when the main character has flaws and actually has to work hard for the things that they want. I hate perfect characters. I'm glad that Ry wasn't perfect.

Another thing I liked about her: she was insecure at times. She wasn't sure about herself. She didn't know if she could handle the Academy. She teetered between leaving and staying. But, in the end, she hunkered down and held out. Despite all of the drama, intense training sessions, lack of sleep, and a confusing relationship with a certain prince, she holds on. That just shows how strong she was. Most people would have already ditched the place when they went through the first day of training, not to mention all of the other crap that Ry has to handle.

Alex is the twin brother of Ry. I really enjoyed Alex. While he's dedicated to his training and education, he can also be really funny at times. He enjoys being a ladies man, but at the same time I think that he wants to really be with someone. He's also very protective of Ry, which I think is so sweet. I don't know why, but I always go "Awwww" when the brother protects his sister. It's just so cute. I will say that I would have liked to have seen more of Alex in the book.

Ella is the best friend of Ry. Ella meets Ry at the Academy and they immediately hit it off. I liked the friendship that they two of them shared. Ella is really kind and sweet. She's a great friend to Ry and always helps her out to the best of her ability. Even though she is really nice, she can also be cruel, especially to people who try to hurt her loved ones. So I would say she's kind of territorial. I really enjoyed Ella and hope that I get to see more from her in the next book.

Now, for one of the most dynamic characters in the book: Prince Darren. I don't know what to say about the Prince. He's rude, mean, sarcastic, and quite snobby. He seems heartless throughout a large portion of the book, and I thought that I was going to hate him. Yet, at the same time, I liked him. (I know, that makes no sense!) Honestly, this was how I felt about Damon Salvatore. You want to hate him but you just can't. I have this same feeling for Prince Darren. He makes Ry's life at the Academy really hard at times and the reader wants to punch him, but then the next scene he'll help Ry out... and then, as the reader, you'll want to hug him. It doesn't help that he's a hunk, either! But even if he is really mean at times and you think that there's no way that the author can make you like him, it happens.

Like I said before, Prince Darren is a very dynamic character. He's got more than meets the eye. Underneath all of the false pretenses, he's actually a great guy. And he cares. He might not show it, but it's there. You can catch glimpses of his real emotions at times, and you know that he's not the bad guy that Ry thinks he is. He has his own reasons for his actions. You might think that there would be no excuse for some of the things that he does in the books, but then he spills the beans about his true intentions and you're left feeling guilty for not trusting his judgement in the first place! Darren will have you hating him one moment and loving him the next. It's a roller coaster ride!

The romance:

While there were many hints to a romance between numerous characters, it's not really the focus of the story. The focus is still training for a possible future through the Academy and passing the tests at the end of the first year to move on. Still, there are glimpses of possible romantic futures for some of our characters, and I hope that this happens! The relationship between Darren and Ry is really rocky and I feel like it will continue to be rocky, especially because of Priscilla, the evil "girlfriend" of Darren. I'm not sure how Darren and Ry will proceed in the next book. Their relationship, or friendship, rather, is very fragile at this moment, so I hope that they'll talk things through. But who knows? As for Alex, I hope he finds love with a certain someone... not saying any names, though.

The magic:

This was one of my favorite parts of the book! I liked the training sessions that the characters had to go through. It was really interesting and I liked learning about it. I will say that most of them are really hard and exhausting, but I thought it was enjoyable. (Probably because I'm not actually doing the work!) Anyway, I like the magical elements in the book and how it ties to the Academy.

Other thoughts:

I didn't really see any grammatical errors- only a few- but I want to let you guys know that the ebook version for First Year has yet to be edited completely. If I'm not mistaken, the paperback version has been edited. So keep that in mind if you're going to read the ebook/epub version. The dialogue flowed freely and smoothly; I didn't find many awkward lines and conversations. Also, I really enjoyed the writing style of Rachel Carter. She was very descriptive and was able to convey what she meant in a few sentences instead of having to drag it on and on forever.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm interested to see what will happen in the next book for Ry, Alex, Darren, Ella, and all of the other characters. I have a feeling that things are going to be any easier than they were in this book! I definitely look forward to reading the rest of the series. If you're a fan of Harry Potter, magic, swoon-worthy men that remind you of Damon Salvatore, an interesting writing style, and gradual romance, this might be the book for you! Go check it out!

Great YA Book!
By Danielle Williams
To be honest I had never heard of Rachel Carter and approached this book with a bit of skeptisim and doubt that I would like it. I could not be happier to have been proven wrong. The Black Mage was written from the pov of Ryiah. Ryiah is a twin growing up in a time of magic. She and her twin Alex are on their way to the Academy when they run into trouble. While Alex has shown magical ability in the past (the reason they are on their way to the Academy) Ryiah never has, but being a twin counterpart to someone with magical ability she too has untapped abilites. The trouble that she senses on the way to the Academy proves it. After finally reaching their desitnation they find out there are 122 hopeful first years, 15 of which will get an apprenticship. Included in the hopefuls is 2nd born to the throne Darren. Ryiah must not only learn the standards (history, math, combat) but must also learn to navigate the somewhat typical school drama and learn who is friend, who is foe, and who wants to have her taken out. I must admit this was a book that had me on edge cheering and laughing, crying and becoming angry just like any good book should. I truly can not wait for more from Rachel E Carter including, I hope, more in this gripping series.

which is a lot of fun to read but at the same time
By all is not lost
Engrossing, endearing YA fantasy tale...

So, I don't normally write reviews, but I wanted to let others out there in search of a really substantial story that The Black Mage: First Year by Rachel E. Carter is worth reading and having your imagination absorbed in this fantasy world.

I especially find the main protagonist, Ryiah, to be so endearing because she perseveres and has substance to her, has goals that go beyond just throwing herself into a romance ( and it's a mysterious one, to be sure, which is a lot of fun to read but at the same time, you want your female protagonist to care about other things, things bigger than herself or potential love interest). She has heart and kindness and again, pluck and self-awareness about her as she makes mistakes and learns from them/reflects on them. She is loyal to her friends and she uses her mind. Grit and resolve also come to mind to describe Ryiah--all qualities that I want in my protagonist.

I think it is valuable to let others know about good stories (isn't that what we're all looking for?), so I wanted to let those of you out there who enjoy a good story (one that makes you care about the characters but also one that is set at a good pace and has tactile descriptions) that this book is one of those.

I think Ms. Carter has done a great job here and I look forward to learning more about the world (more world-building I hope and political intrigue) around Ryiah as the planned 4-book series continues. This book was especially character-driven, so I was absorbed in the "who" of it all, but not as much the "why" of the story--why does this country need these Combat mages and revere them as much as they seem to? what various other countries is Ryiah's country at war with and why?

I wonder even if the male protagonist's point of view would add dimension in the next 3 books of the series? Just a thought.

it's engaging (and I know that word is used a lot in book reviews but this story has enough substance to it to successfully carry you along with it). it's clean with just the right amount of romantic tension and the arc of the story, to take a line from Ms. Carter, has so much "potential" as we wait for the next book to come out!

A Beautifully Written Hot Read!!
By Review by Reds~Dusty Summerford
I loved this book. I thought the story was amazing and it was a very fast read. I couldn't put it down.
I fell in love with Cass from the first page. He was so adamant about sex only being sex that I knew his story was gonna be amazing. Then we meet Nic and her story broke my heart. I was so pulling for her to finally find herself again. I truly enjoyed their journey.
This read had all the feels you want in a good book. It had lust, heartbreak, laughter, and love. It is definitely a great read and I'll recommend it to all my book loving friends!

It could've been better
By Celebrity Readers AKA Carla Waluck
2.5 stars

I think I have a love /hate relationship with Miss Cory Cyr’s books. I love to hate them, or I hate to love them. I’m still not sure which.

I do love a good erotica. And I have recently been reading the older woman/younger men ones because they are different than my normal M/M ones that I have been reading. This one just didn’t flip my switch.

I found Cas to be immature and self centered. I couldn’t understand how a woman of Nic’s background could ever find that attractive. I also took issue with the fact that what they felt was purely physical, yet, they spoke and thought of each other as if it held more depth. They didn’t get to know each other, it was all sexual. He thought she was hot for a widow and she thought he was hot for a younger guy. That’s it. They didn’t get to know each other on a more personal level and that right there killed it for me. I know I may sound a bit hard on this book but I need more to really suspend my belief.

I found the constant warring of feelings by both MC’s in this book to be monotonous and a bit boring. It took me three days to finish the last few chapters making this my least favorite book by this author so far. The setting didn’t really seem pertinent to the plot either, making me think it was for shock value and not really needed for the progress of the characters in the story line.

All in all I will most likely read another one from this author because I know that she has good books in her. This one wasn’t one of those for me. And I love being proven wrong.

Sexual Awakening
By Sharing My Book Boyfriends
I loved Acquiesce! I can't believe I waited so long to read it! I loved the connection between Nic and Cass. They were complete opposites, but like the saying goes, "opposites attract". Nic believed in love, and thought it only came once in a lifetime. She had a great love with her husband, but when he died, Nic felt like she had died too. Cass doesn't believe in love. For him, sex is all he needs. When Nic and Cass meet, both are resistant because of an age gap. They become friends, although they each want something different out of the relationship. Can Cass show Nic the pleasures of sex without love? Can Nic guard her heart from falling for Cass? I really enjoyed reading this book, and look forward to reading more from this author.
