First published in 1925, The Painted Veil is an affirmation of the human capacity to grow, change, and forgive. Stripped of the British society of her youth and overwhelmed by the desolation around her, she is compelled by her awakening conscience to reassess her life. She takes up work with children at a convent, but when her husband dies, she is forced to return to England to her father, her one remaining relative, to raise her unborn child. Though too late for her marriage, she has learned humility, independence, and how to love.

From Library Journal
Shallow, poorly educated Kitty marries the passionate and intellectual Walter Fane and has an affair with a career politician, Charles Townsend, assistant colonial secretary of Hong Kong. When Walter discovers the relationship, he compels Kitty to accompany him to a cholera-infested region of mainland China, where she finds limited happiness working with children at a convent. But when Walter dies, she is forced to leave China and return to England. Generally abandoned, she grasps desperately for the affection of her one remaining relative, her long-ignored father. In the end, in sharp, unexamined contrast to her own behavior patterns, she asserts that her unborn daughter will grow up to be an independent woman. The Painted Veil was first published in 1925 and is usually described as a strong story about a woman's spiritual journey. To more pragmatic, modern eyes, Kitty's emotional growth appears minimal. Still, if not a major feminist work, the book has literary interest. Sophie Ward's uninflected reading is competent if not compelling. Recommended only for large literature collections. I. Excellent story about the human condition that is not remotely dated.
By John H.
The Painted Veil once again reinforces to me that there is nothing new under the sun. Maugham's story could have taken place in 2016. I was inspired to read it after seeing the film adaptation, which was an entertaining story in its own right, but completely different in its treatment and outcome. Readers should be prepared for this if they are coming into the story from the same perspective.
The humanity in Maugham's writing is refreshing, the storytelling straightforward, the characters well developed and real. He not only does a splendid job creating a shallow, self-possessed and unlikeable character, but more importantly, convinces the reader to stick with her through the journey of maturity and transformation into a caring human being.

Quick and intriguing read - a very different feel from the most recent movie
By TeamDowager
For those of you out there that enjoy books that are different from their movie translations - I definitely recommend the Painted Veil. I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the most recent movie, but they are distinctly different. In not spoiling anything, the book is written in the third person, but from the main character Kitty's point of view. Maugham brilliantly portrays Kitty in a human way. Kitty's whimsical and conflicted heart and purpose of being is at the center of this novel. The movie tends to over simplify her relationships with others, whereas the book goes so much deeper and in a way challenges the reader to think about their own desires and downfalls. Additionally, this was a super-quick read, especially on the kindle. The chapters are short so that you can cover a few over a lunch break, and at times Maugham represents his time through some challenging vocabulary - kindle makes this easy to understand with a simple touch. That said, this book is no where as neat and tidy as its movie translations. It presents a very muddled main character who is a creature of her own time and who judges others in ways that are at times offensive to our modern sensibilities. At times you may get frustrated with Kitty's imperialist and blatantly racist perspective. The narrator is anything but subtle. As a character Kitty is not a hero, she's a very flawed human being, which makes this book a valuable piece to study and discuss with others!

Great book, but I prefer the (2006) film. *spoilers*
By Alexandria
Maugham does a fantastic job maturing the protagonist, Kitty Fane, from her spoiled view on life, to a self realization of her actions. I was very disappointed by the end of the book, however, that after her husband dies and she regrets her affair with Charlie, she sleeps with him AGAIN. Why? She lost a lot of her growth she gained in the book when she did that. But I suppose that proves that we are human and continue to make mistakes.
I did prefer the film, released in 2006. It made me CARE about Walter and his death more than I did in the book. I was horrified when one of the book characters states that he may have experimented on himself on purpose, rather than accident. I was glad that was left out in the film. I would suggest watching the film before reading the novel, because they are so different from each other. The film is LOOSELY based on the book.
Despite these differences, I would highly recommend everyone interested to read this book. It's less than 200 pages and a hard book to put down. Very entertaining, well imaged and I have not "highlighted" as much as I did in this book than previous books.
