The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb, by Dennis D. Wainstock

This book is a balanced account of the political, diplomatic, and military currents that influenced Japan's attempts to surrender and the United States's decision to drop the atomic bombs. Based on extensive research in both the United States and Japan, this book allows the reader to follow the parallel decision-making in Tokyo and Washington that contributed to lost opportunities that might have allowed a less brutal conclusion to the war. Topics discussed and analyzed include Japan's desperate military situation; its decision to look to the Soviet Union to mediate the conflict; the Manhattan Project; the debates within Truman's Administration and the armed forces as to whether to modify unconditional surrender terms to include retention of Emperor Hirohito and whether to plan for the invasion of Japan's home islands or to rely instead on blockade and bombing to force the surrender.

A Balanced Account
By Jerry G.
In a topic that is commonly infused with rhetoric and distortion it's refreshing to read something that doesn't resort to any cheap tricks. This book is simply a balanced account of the situation that resulted in the use of atomic weapons at the end of World War II. Instead of pointing fingers and manufacturing conspiracy theories, as many books on this subject do, it's "just the facts, ma'am". Japanese peace feelers are discussed, as is the reality that these efforts were not endorsed by the militarists who ran the country. Efforts to assure the Japanese that their emperor would not be removed, which some believed would hasten the end of the war, are detailed. In addition, the viewpoints of those who favored a more strict interpretation of the unconditional surrender doctrine are explained. The revisionists who argue that the use of the bomb was unnecessary go through this story with a cleaver and chop out the parts that don't fit in with their preconceived notions. Fears about Soviet expansion in Asia are emphasized while the battle of Okinawa with it's massive U.S. casualties is ignored, for example, giving the impression that the bomb was dropped as a warning to the Russians. In fact, you could go through this book with a pair of scissors ala William Burroughs's cutup method and only keep certain parts of certain sentences, paste those parts together and voila - you've got yourself a standard issue anti-bomb dropping diatribe.
The most interesting part of the book to me dealt with the Japanese "peace party". There were some who wanted to avoid the war altogether and tried to arrange a meeting with Roosevelt to defuse tentions. Even in 1942 there were a few clear sighted individuals who knew the war could not be won and wanted to start negotiations with the U.S. This tale only shows how fully the militarists were in control. Overall, however, the writing style here is dry and academic. The details that bring history to life are occasionally present but can't overcome the less than riveting presentation. This isn't something to bring to the beach. You'll have to have a serious interest in the topic in order to like it.
The author appropriately confines his personal views to the back of the book where they belong. He says repeatedly that the allied policy of unconditional surrender was "a policy of revenge". This is flat wrong and betrays a deep lack of knowledge about the wider period in time surrounding the narrowly focused events he describes. Unconditional surrender was a response to the lessons of World War I as well as the policies of appeasement that resulted in the Second World War. It's aim was to end the war without laying the seeds of future conflict. The fact that Germany and Japan have not been a threat to world peace since 1945 proves the value of this policy. Wainstock tells us that if we had only been willing to negotiate with the likes of Hitler and his pals we could have ended the war earlier and saved a lot of lives. I'm sure he hopes our government will take this approach the next time we're confronted with two powerful dictatorships bent on conquest. Let's head to the negotiating table and work out a deal - they'll be reasonable. Hey, everybody's got the right to second guess the decisions taken a half-century ago during the largest war the world has ever seen. At least the line between opinion and fact remains solid in this book.

Rivetting
By Bruno Soul
This is a profoundly interesting book on what led the US to drop the bomb. Obviously, the author thinks that it could have been avoided (Japan was already ready to negotiate its surrender even months before the first atomic bomb was tested), and he makes it clear at some point in the book, but that does not hinder him to take an unbiased approach to the subject, as he presents diverse views on it by the different actors at the time and offer facts, not his opinions throughout.

I think the reviewer talking about a "deep lack of knowledge about the wider period in time surrounding the narrowly focused events he(ie. the author) describes", is clearly exaggerating or out of his mind. Given the research necessary to produce this book, I don't need to give the author the benefit of the doubt in terms of his knowldege of the "wider period" mentioned. You can't write such an exceptional book if you know only the "narrowly focused events" that appear in the research.

Also, despite the subject, I think it is very easily read and offers many insights into one of the most controversial decision of the 20th century (of all times?).

Whatever one can say, the US is still the only country on the planet to have used atomic bombs on human beings (and Japan the only country to have been at the receiving end of it). A fact that some (of course (?) only Americans) take with pride, but which has to be accompanied with tremendous guilt and questioning for having unleashed such a terribly destructive power on defenseless civilians. Still a huge ethical issue nowadays, in my opinion.

Great single volume history of Truman and the bomb
By A Customer
This was an amazing book. My father is a history teacher and there were things in this book that not even he knew. Wainstock adeptly guides you through the Japanese situation in 1945, history about the bomb and the scientists who made it, the Potsdam Conference and Decleration and Truman's final decision. Packed with quotes from both the American and the Japanese this book is an unbiased account of the atomic bomb.

Treatise of Man (Great Minds Series), by Rene Descartes

Besides his more famous works of philosophy - Discourse on Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Principles of Philosophy - Descartes devoted a great deal of time and thought to the study of physiology and anatomy. An account of his activities in 1629 reports that he visited butcher shops on an almost daily basis to study specific animal organs, and he practiced dissection and even vivisection to explore the workings of major organ systems. In the 1630s, he assisted in the dissection of human cadavers - all to satisfy his intense curiosity about how bodies, animal and human, work. The fruits of this research can be found in his Treatise of Man, a work that he decided not to publish for fear of suffering the same fate as Galileo. Consequently, this fascinating treatise did not appear until twelve years after his death.
Among its many intriguing features are his detailed descriptions of the nervous system and its interactions with the muscles to create movement in response to stimulus. Though we now know that many of these details are wrong, Descartes' understanding that much of the body functions as a machine was a stroke of genius. He is the first to describe the reflex arc, anticipating Pavlov and the behaviorists by almost 300 years. The idea of the body as a kind of animal machine that functions according to physical laws was an immense advance over the previous scholastic notions based on Aristotle, which merely begged the question of how the various organs of the body work by stating that it is in their nature to perform their specific functions.
This is a landmark work that students of history, medicine, biology, and the history of science will find richly rewarding.

About the Author

Ren? Descartes, known as the Father of Modern Philosophy and inventor of Cartesian coordinates, was a seventeenth century French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy and mathematics, and was a proponent of rationalism, believing strongly in fact and deductive reasoning. Working in both French and Latin, he wrote many mathematical and philosophical works including The World, Discourse on a Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Passions of the Soul. He is perhaps best known for originating the statement I think, therefore I am.

Descartes' "Treatise of Man"
By mp
Ren Descartes' 1629 "Treatise of Man" is a piece of natural philosophy worth noting and reading for a few reasons. Know that I have a long standing antipathy for Descartes for my own personal reasons. In the "Treatise," Descartes attempts to explain the workings of the human body by drawing an explicit comparison between a hypothetical "machine" which operates, ostensibly, "like we do". Descartes spends the best part of the "Treatise" outlining the ways that this machine's senses are informed by the singly material operations of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Working on what basically amounts to as a heat-model, Descartes discusses how blood in the heart, and what he calls animal spirits in the brain cause the human machine to function just "as we do" - without the supposed necessity of the soul. He does not dispense with the idea of the soul, however - after all that would get him excommunicated faster than he could have said "cogito ergo sum" - he merely dances around the issue by saying that the major difference between the human machine and "us" is that we have a soul located in its seat, the brain. His purpose, again, is to show how a soul is not necessary to the bodily functions of man - that our bodies all operate the same, and according to rational physical principles.
Descartes can be seen in the "Treatise" as a major contributor to late 17th and early 18th century notions of human passions. To this he contributes the omnipresent image of the filaments with which he says our nervous systems are comprised. Certainly we have all heard phrases like, "tugging on your heartstrings" - this popularly arises out of philosophies like Descartes, who proposes that our physical reactions - to pain, pleasure, etc. - are all the results of these filaments, or cords, within our bodies, which external stimuli act upon, sending messages to our brains. This affects not only reaction, but perception, and even the manifestations of our emotional responses to the external world.
Sight and Touch are Descartes' major focuses in the realm of human sensory perception. Noteworthy in the "Treatise" are Descartes' many example illustrations, scattered generously throughout the text and abundantly provided in this Prometheus Press edition of the "Treatise". From the mundane illustration showing how a person becomes aware of the pain of a fire, to the more unusual visual perception illustrations of a person in profile with one eyeball on top of the other, to the most interesting illustrations of the central "Gland H" in the brain, which becomes erect and points around in response to stimuli - Descartes' illustrations are, for me, the most fascinating part of the "Treatise."
One problem I have with Descartes' "Treatise," is the absolutely arbitrary way he delineates human perception. In Descartes' machine-logic, our perceptions follow and focus on whatever most immediately presents itself to the mind. In this schema - one could be talking to a friend, and completely forget about the friend if a butterfly crosses our line of vision - the ability to focus on one thing for a sustained period of time is something Descartes does not discuss. It leaves the reader, or at least this one, wondering if sustained focus is the province of the soul, which he does not discuss in this work, or if not - how he managed to write so much with the perpetual threat of distraction.

Review
"The first edition of this Handbook was outstanding. This second edition is even more inclusive and up to date, with a choice of chapters that nicely complement one another and are written with unusual clarity. I see this as a must-read that will help all of us interested in the learning sciences move toward new levels of synthesis and application, and discover previously hidden pathways toward exciting new research issues. We owe the editor and authors a great debt of thanks for their outstanding work."
John D. Bransford, Shauna C. Larson Professor of the Learning Sciences at the University of Washington, Emeritus

"The learning sciences is well exemplified in this very well-put-together book. There are excellent articles here about learning by argumentation, by collaboration, through projects, through cognitive apprenticeship, and in virtual words. This book demonstrates that learning scientists continue to make great progress on how learning works."
Roger Schank, Professor Emeritus, Northwestern University, Illinois

"Too often, we educators teach in the ways that we have been taught, without regard to the research about how learning actually happens. This anthology is an invaluable contribution to a long overdue discussion about how best to 'reinvent' education for the twenty-first century."
Tony Wagner, Harvard University, Massachusetts, author of The Global Achievement Gap and Creating Innovators

"In an academic landscape characterized by increasing specialization, the learning sciences stands out for its broad and interdisciplinary approach. In this highly readable and useful overview of the field, this outstanding group of authors demonstrates the power and promise of a field motivated not by the advance of a particular theory or paradigm but by a desire to understand and solve some of the most significant issues of our day - issues of education and learning in a socially and technologically complex world."
James W. Stigler, University of California, Los Angeles

"This is a deeply rich, comprehensive handbook of the learning sciences. The volume covers an impressive array of topics - from theoretical approaches to methodologies to concrete, implementable instructional techniques. I found it to be extremely informative and accessible. Without a doubt this handbook will be an indispensable and satisfying resource for students, researchers, teachers and experts."

Good update to the first edition
By Joshua Rosenberg
I read the first edition and looked forward to the release of this edition. About half of the chapters are new or significantly changed. A strength is its breath of topics (from foundations and methodologies to practices and using research to change practice). Occasionally the breadth made me want to read a commentary or syntheses across specific chapters, in addition to the conclusion. For example, consecutive chapters on project-based and problem-based learning did not address their similarities and differences. Also, there are some editorial errors that caught my attention, such as the reference to the early behaviorist "Edwin Thorndike" (his first name is Edward). Overall, this is a good reference and starting point for recent research in education.

Her husband, Jackson, stays by her side and sees to all of her needs. But when she wakes up wearing a diaper and footie pajamas, she is furious. Jackson apologizes, but he does admit that he has always yearned to care for Samantha like a loving daddy.

Samantha is shaken by this revelation, but after some reading and some thinking, she agrees to try being Jackson’s little girl. She soon finds herself happily immersed in a land of games, dolls, bedtime stories, and her daddy’s loving care for her every need. She isn’t sure how she feels about wearing a diaper, and she definitely doesn’t like the spankings she gets when she’s naughty, but the peaceful surrender that comes with being her daddy’s little girl makes her feel as though every stressful part of her life has been erased.

Samantha and Jackson fall into a routine: she is an adult on the weekdays, and a little girl—and sometimes a baby—on the weekends. But when she slips up and embarrasses herself by behaving childishly during a stressful morning at work, she reconsiders their new relationship. Will she give up the lifestyle she’s grown to love so much, or can she come to accept that there is nothing wrong with choosing to be her daddy’s little girl?

Publisher’s Note: Little Samantha’s Choice is an erotic novel that contains spankings, age play, anal play, elements of BDSM, sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book

First time author hits the nail on the head!
By Nichols Reviews
Jackson has always had an age play fetish. He wants someone to take care of and nuture. He loves Samantha but fears if he comes to terms and buckles down and expresses his need Samantha will leave him. When she falls ill he takes on the role of care taker, he didn't expect to wake up and discover it before he had a chance to explain to her his reasons.

Samantha is shaken to say the least waking up in a diaper and footie pajamas. She has the biggest internal conflict as she reluctantly agrees to try an age play relationship. Throughout the story she goes back and forth as her body yearns for the relaxation and carefree attitude that being a little gives.

I loved Little Samantha's Choice because it is a fresh perspective. O'Reilly takes a risk by making it Jackson's need instead of the usual woman's need. She gives plenty of conversation and explanation as to why he wants this while bringing to light Samantha's fears. I feel like if Samantha would have just given in and submitted to the lifestyle change it wouldn't have made as strong of a story. For this to be a debut author I would have thought she had been writing for years. The experience and well thought out story line impressed me and drew me in from the first few pages. If this is O'Reilly's first story I cannot wait to see what else she brings to the table.

Don't miss this one!!

Great read here with a new take on an age play story. Samantha's conflict with the age play dynamic and Jackson's angst and fear for his marriage felt extremely real as I read the book. A very well written story, a plot with some depth, and characters that yank you into their lives makes me look forward to another by this author. Don't miss this one! I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an Advanced Reader Copy.

A straightforward adaptation of a weak story
By Amazon Customer
The television story upon which this book is based was written by Terry Nation, who a couple of months earlier got the great British public to tune in compulsively to watch his Dalek serial. While this Dalek story firmly established Doctor Who as a favourite in the hearts of the public, it is rather sad to see that his second script was a cliche-ridden story that might just as well have been a Flash Gordon serial (no offence to Flash Gordon fans, but the ideal stories for the two characters are very different!).
The TARDIS arrives on the island Marinus, where the crew are captured but later convince the Keeper of the Conscience of Marinus that they are not saboteurs - unlike the Voord, who they help the Keeper to overcome. Arbitan, the Keeper, sets the travellers on a quest to obtain the microcircuit keys that control the Conscience, a computer that governs the world and eliminates feelings of evil, so that it can be reset to also influence the Voord.
Each key is hidden in a location which the travellers must explore to find it, overcoming a variety of perils. Unfortunately, even for 1964 when this story was broadcast, the perils are old hat as are the ways in which the travellers overcome them.
Philip Hinchcliffe's novelisation is quite workmanlike, but given the paucity of the original story can't do too much to rise it out of the ranks of mediocrity in which it rightly belongs.

Not as good as the TV episodes...
By Michael Valdivielso
The Keys of Marinus is one of the best First Doctor adventure. I love the details, the sense of a quest, the feeling of danger towards a whole planet. Too bad that does not come out in the novel form of the story. It lacks the feeling of detail, the complex characters, the whole feeling of a epic story has been tossed out the window.

About the Author
Born in Saffron Waldon, Essex, Gordon Jacob was one of the most musically conservative of his generation of composers. Though he studied with Vaughan Williams and Stanford at the Royal College, Jacob preferred the more austere Baroque and Classical models to the Romanticism of his peers. He was a skilful writer for winds, and a good deal of his regard today is for his embracing of the wind band. Jacob was highly prolific and published over 700 pieces of music before his death in 1984, in addition to his four books and numerous essays on music.

From Publishers Weekly
Noted Yale historian Demos has devoted almost half a century to studying the European and American witch crazes, and his new book distills all he has learned. The book focuses from roughly A.D. 500 through 1700, with a concluding section on the characteristically modern phenomenon of witch-hunts without witches—such as McCarthyism. What all witch hunts have in common is a targeting of the enemy within—a member of the community who is identified as disloyal. Such fears coalesced: toward the turbulent end of the Middle Ages, when one was expected to adhere to Christian beliefs; in late 18th- and 19th-century America, when Masons' loyalty to republican principles was questioned; and in the late 20th century, when threats real and imagined to the family culminated in the day-care satanic cult allegations. Succinct and lucid in his analysis, Demos offers vivid examples of the accuseds' travails as well as probing the mindsets of their tormentors. This should appeal to a wide array of general readers and specialists alike. (Oct.)

From Booklist
For each of four instances of witch-hunting in Europe, early America, Salem (Massachusetts), and contemporary America, Demos provides the stories of two persons affected by it and an excellent overview of what historians know about each incidence and how they interpret documentary and other evidence. He presents several theories about witch-hunting, but as the title implies, he believes witch-hunting is a way of purging from within, specifically aimed at women and only collaterally at men connected to the targeted women. A witch-hunt, by Demos’ definition, finds women who represent something unsettling to society and punishes or kills them to “cleanse” the society. That witch-hunting is a form of misogyny is central to Demos’ argument, and when he examines recent “witch-hunting” episodes, he finds the term applicable only as a metaphor. Controversially, he argues that persecution of female day-care operators in the 1980s for alleged Satanism was witch-hunting, since at the time women needed day care because they were entering the workforce in numbers that constituted a socially destabilizing movement. Compelling, impressively researched history and argumentation. --Patricia Monaghan

Review
"No scholar has done more to illuminate the terrifying psychology of witchcraft in Western culture than John Demos. "The Enemy Within" is a masterful synthesis of this phenomenon, stretching over 2000 years, from its origins in Europe through the Salem witch trials, the Red-hunting campaigns of Senator Joe McCarthy, and the modern-day hysteria surrounding Satanic cults and sensational child abuse charges. An elegant writer, a brilliant historical investigator, Demos is the perfect guide for this rich and fascinating journey."
--David Oshinsky, winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in History for "Polio: An American Story" and author of "A Conspiracy so Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy"
aOnly John Demos could write this book! In succinct and well-written chapters, Demos introduces readers to the ways in which anger and fear have caused western societies to turn inward in panics we now call witch-hunts. "The Enemy Within," simultaneously sweeping and specific, broadens Demos's earlier work on witchcraft in seventeenth-century New England into a thought-provoking and wide-ranging study.a
--Mary Beth Norton, author of "In the Devil's Snare"
aA searing story, and a remarkable read. Unlike most historians, Demos does not flinch from taking us up close to real characters. We see the world through the eyes of men and women accused of witchcraft by neighbors they had known for years, as he probes the psychodynamics at work in this terrible experience. In a distillation of a lifetime's research, Demos, who is the foremost scholar of early American witchcraft, reveals patterns that go back to the European middle ages and explains how shifting interpretations of Salem reflect itsplace at the heart of the American psyche.a
--Lyndal Roper, Professor of Early Modern History, Balliol College, Oxford

"There is no one better qualified to tell these stories and write a general history of witch-hunting than John Demos."
-"The Boston Globe"

" No scholar has done more to illuminate the terrifying psychology of witchcraft in Western culture than John Demos. "The Enemy Within" is a masterful synthesis of this phenomenon."
-David Oshinsky, author of "Polio: An American Story", winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in history

" Demos compresses events over two millennia . . . with minimal grisliness, a spirited style, and by hanging enough historical wallpaper for a newcomer to the subject to feel at home."
-"The Seattle Times"

It Wasn't Just in Salem
By Rob Hardy
Everyone knows about the witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Few people know as much about them as John Demos, a professor of history who has written academic texts on the theme and about early American history. Demos explains that after writing _Entertaining Satan_ in 1982, he thought he had said his last about the history of witchcraft. "Yet the talk-show invitations kept coming each year at Halloween; there was still the occasional witchcraft conference to attend; there were even middle-of-the-night phone calls from people who thought themselves possessed by the Devil." So when he was invited to write a synthesis of the subject, he had reasons to take on the project, although he had been used to writing about specific cases from centuries ago, and doing so for an academic audience. _The Enemy Within: 2,000 Years of Witch-Hunting in the Western World_ (Viking) is the result, and while it inevitably covers the witch scare in New England, the longer view has to do with the larger pattern of blaming and scapegoating. People have done this for centuries, and although we might congratulate ourselves for graduating from the magical, supernatural thinking that brought forth the Salem trials, we are still demonizing. Demos's chapters are a set of historic essays on important themes, and his broad outlook on the subject is well-reasoned and fascinating.

Christianity developed a tolerance, even a complicity, to witch-magic. Sorcerers, usually women, might be despised or condemned, but they were also respected and consulted especially to work a bit of counter-magic against some curse large or small. Spells and charms were thought effective in battling against a mystifying world, and the church had similar remedies. Christians, for instance, used sacred relics to promote cures or they valued charms such as medallions made from paschal candles. By the end of the fourteenth century, the disarray from wars and plague, an increased emphasis on Satan as a foil to Christ, and inquisitorial investigations with the acceptance of torture to gain evidence all brought increased attention to witches. Demos devotes a chapter to the famous _Malleus Maleficarum_, first published in 1486, a guide to what witches do and how to catch them out. Pope Innocent VIII himself supported the book, which showed it was heresy not to believe in witches and their connection to the Devil, listed the leading forms of witchcraft and what witches did, and advised how to get evidence against them, including torturing them to get the truth. Demos summarizes the famous events at Salem, with a specific chapter on one of the chief participants, Cotton Mather. The Puritan minister was preoccupied with witches partly because they fitted into his vision of the imminent millennium and return of Christ, and he encouraged the Salem prosecutions. As society began to doubt the wisdom of the witch trials, so Mather lessened his emphasis on the scourge, but for him, to stop believing in witches would have been to stop believing in God, for the beliefs were closely linked. He even came to reconsider the trials years later, after they had hung their victims, and to regret what had happened and the errors that had been made. Unlike some others involved, however, he made no apology.

We don't persecute witches anymore like Mather wanted to, but in his final section, Demos shows that the persecution continues. It isn't for nothing that McCarthyism is called witch-hunting. The analogy was most sharply drawn in Arthur Miller's drama _The Crucible_ in 1952; Miller had researched the historic Salem trials before writing his play, which Demos commends for its accuracy in the depiction of the atmosphere of that time, and for enhancing the power of the term witch-hunting. Demos points out analogies (and differences) in the witch-hunting of other forms and other eras, like the anti-Masonry scares, the persecution of the Bavarian Illuminati, and others. A final chapter shows witch-hunting in a scary modern form, the child care sex-abuse crisis of only the past couple of decades. Accused of Satanism and crimes against children, operators of the Fells Acres Day School, for instance, were convicted and sentenced to up to forty years of prison, serving some years before the sentences were overturned. Demos cites day-care stories of rituals, a prosecutorial compulsion for punitive retribution, coercive or suggestive questioning of children, and a refusal to accept victims' denials as the same sort of processes involved at Salem. The ancient witch enemy is with us still.

Woman as Evil
By Elizabeth Wallace
I heard a radio interview with Yale historian & Prof. John Demos when this book first came out and bought it later that day. I was not disappointed. What literally blew me away was a significant piece of history I was unaware of, the chapter "Malleus Maleficarum," or "Hammer on Evildoers" [witches]. ( "Maleficarum" is the feminine version of "evil-doers" whereas "Maleficorum" is the masculine.)
"Malleus" is a treatise written by two Inquisitors of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church, Kramer & Sprenger and endorsed in 1484 by the papal bull of Pope Innocent VIII. The first index was again produced in 1559 under Pope Paul IV. Women were said to have "insatiable carnal lust" and "sex with the Devil," were "prone to demonic temptations because of their many weaknesses," and "had the power to steal men's penises," "killed babies" and "ate human flesh." This widespread publication, the creation of which coincided with the Gutenberg Press, spread throughout Europe like a plague, creating mass hysteria, tortures, and executions that lasted for centuries.
Certainly Demos' book is an in-depth and all-inclusive account of witchcraft from the dark ages to the modern day; including the Salem witch trials, the Freemasons, and the McCarthy era.
"The enemy" is seen as the woman, usually old, widowed, or one who stands out from the social "norm" and causes discomfort. A witch-hunt, by Demos' definition, finds women who represent something unsettling to society and punishes or kills them to rid society of its ills.
Demos' broad outlook on the subject is fascinating. Highly recommended.

Scapegoats and victims
By Linda Pagliuco
The term "witch hunt" is used metaphorically today to describe all sorts of attempts by communities to rid themselves of elements deemed "evil", whether those elements are communists, child abusers, or heretics. People do not like what they do not understand, and crises, be they epidemics, wars, terrorists, or waves of immigrants, they tend to band together to find someone to blame, along with a way to expel that threat. In The Enemy Within, respected historian John Demos shows, in the first part of the book, how and why early western societies persecuted and executed suspected witches, examining the sociological factors that led to the panic. In the second part, he deals with contemporary society, in which we view ourselves as scientifically informed and free of superstition, yet persist in the ancient drive to identify and purge the causes of our deepest anxieties. Hard times seem to revive our collective fears, and the challenge is to avoid lapsing into the old, destructive, reactionary patterns. Written for the general reader, The Enemy Within is a potent reminder to remember how near to the surface the patterns remain, and to strive to find intelligent solutions to the very real problems that we face today.
