This book does an excellent job explaining the origins and impact of shame- one of the go to weapons in Satan's arsenal. The author eloquently weaves the thread of The Gospel throughout this book, reminding us that Christ became the Shame Bearer so that we may be redeemed. Christ took on our shame. McKinney writes from a perspective of his own vulnerablity and his message is earnest and heartfelt. He brings to light how Satan works mainly in our yesterdays and our tomorrows, through shame and fear of the unknown. McKinney gives concrete examples which help us to identify arcane ways that shame creeps into our lives. He shares practical applications one can use to help form healthy habits for living in the present and living life unashamed. I think this book is an excellent self-help resource or for a recovery group. There are also in-depth questions after each chapter, which make it condusive for small group studies.

I don’t really think of myself as someone who struggles with shame but the book opened my eyes to how wide the arms of shame spread. It helped me identify areas of my own life where Satan has used these lies to affect my relationship with Christ and with others. I highly recommend it. It’s great individually or also for small groups. My sons are currently going through it with their small group and I’m so glad.

Inherently vulnerable because of the country's physical environment, its tribal makeup, and a small economic base, the Safavid state was fatally weakened over the course of the seventeenth century. Matthee views Safavid Iran as a network of precarious alliances subject to perpetual negotiation and the society they ruled as an uneasy balance between conflicting forces. In the later seventeenth century, this delicate balance shifted from cohesion to fragmentation. An increasingly detached, palace-bound shah; a weakening link between the capital and the outlying provinces; the regime's neglect of the military; and its short-sighted monetary policies combined to exacerbate rather than redress existing problems, leaving the country with a ruler too feeble to hold factionalism and corruption in check and a military unable to defend its borders against outside attack by Ottomans and Afghans. The scene was set for the Crisis of 1722. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of Iranian history and the period that led to two hundred years of decline and eclipse for Iran.

Eurasian empires decline : a case study

Around 1600 AD, the Eurasian continent was dominated by four empires : Turk Ottomans, Iranian Safavids, north Indian Moghols and chinese Ming. Around 1700, all these empires have declined or decomposed to various degree, and the pattern of decline is very similar in all of them.

Rudi Matthee gives a thoughtful study of the decomposition of one of these empires, the Safavids. The book is divided into separate themes (sources of power, the problem of money, the making of official religion, war and military organisation...) and relations between these themes are stressed and highlighted. The foundations of this study are drawn from both Iranian and foreign (mainly duch merchants reports and Chardin travels) sources.

The author concentrates on the last hundred years of the Safavids, and assumes some familiarity with the preceding period, specially the Shah Abass I period. The study is solely focused on Iran and does not draw any analogy with the three other empires, but it will be easy for the reader to see the general pattern.

To Iranian readers, the book is a "national myth" spoiler. The official history made up by the last dynasty (the Pahlavis) put the decomposition of the empire on the shoulder of the Ghadjar (~1800-1920). The book shows that the decline is much older than that, and the same causes continue to these days.

Here we have a thorough analysis of how the once-glorious Safavid dynasty of Persia (Iran) declined and fell. I like this book immensely.

The book I got was the original hardbound edition because I could actually get it more cheaply than the recent Dover reprint. But I am happy to see that Dover did reprint this book, because it is probably the best book on its subject matter that I have seen. The only negative comment I might have is that it is a relatively slim book but covers a lot of ground, so it might be too compressed for some students.

Some books introduce vectors as directed line segments, others as ordered n-tuples (where n is the dimensionality of a space). This book very quickly gets to both concepts, and even points out that a vector is really an equivalence class of directed line segments, something I had stated to someone whom I was helping to understand vector algebra, but something I do not recall seeing in any book.

The relationship of projective, affine, and metric Euclidean geometry is covered very well, better than I have seen it elsewhere, and homogeneous coordinates are introduced in a way that I think is better motivated than what I have seen in most books dealing with projective geometry. The relationship between Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic geometry is also covered. Vector methods are used to cover many topics (such as spherical trigonometry and linear programming) that would usually not be introduced in a book entitled "Vector Geometry." The relationship between matrices and vectors is covered as well as in any linear algebra book, and all in all, this book goes far beyond other books that purport to cover the same subject.

I cannot rate this book too highly. As I said, I am glad to see that Dover has reprinted it.

1st yr student in maths at U of T. Very condensed, many errors, but highly challenging, difficult but eminently satisfying. Although G de B was not my lecturer, he was still around. I learned much from his book.

About the Author
Milton J. Bennett served in the Peace Corps in Micronesia, received his doctorate in communication from the University of Minnesota, and has taught communication at Portland State University. He is currently a co-director of The Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, Oregon. He is also the co-author of American Cultural Patterns, with Edward C. Stewart.

Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication

This is a must read book, especially for those dealing with intercultural communication, both in the areas of foreign language learning and business management. I read some of the articles twice even three times and found the them very inspiring for my teachings as they provided a strong foundation on cross cultural understanding; moreover they have helped me a lot in highlighting the sensitive matters in intercultural communication to my class. I assume anyone dealing with people from different cultural background need to know the arts of intercultural communication, as misunderstanding might result in losing the business. I am quite positive that this book will also be of great help for managers, business people who have to deal with their foreign partners.

A very mixed bag of articles to read with eyes wide open

"Basic Communications of Intercultural Communication" is a collection of thirteen essays on a variety of cross-cultural topics, mostly those affecting people of different nationalities or speaking different languages. The quality of the articles is very uneven.
Dean Barnlund has contributed a finely crafted piece on the difficulties our increasingly international society will face, when we already struggle so mightily with cultural differences within our own communities. Barnlund suggests reasons from his own research that explain why individuals easily empathize with some cultures and respond in a hostile way to others.
Sheila Ramsey has written an excellent primer for American and Japanese business people who have to be effective in each other's very different societies. She is clearly entirely at home with her subject and her explanations are clear and detailed.
A couple of writers have presented refreshingly down-to-earth articles on the differences beween American black and anglo culture. Thomas Kochman repeats the results of Carol Koogler's observation of two different teachers dealing with the same class of mixed black and anglo children and how they get different results according to their empathy with each group's cultural assumptions.
Unfortunately I was looking for a book that I could recommend to American business people visiting European offices. The chapters about socio-linguistics were the least satisfactory. Benjamin Lee Whorf trots out that hoary old myth about Eskimos having more words for snow than other North Americans. Dr Bennett himself offers the theory that Americans are more egalitarian than Europeans in part because English has only one word for 'you', unlike most European languages that usually have two or three. He doesn't resolve the anomaly that the most egalitarian countries in the world (Norway, Denmark and Sweden) are all in Europe and all speak languages with multiple forms of the word 'you'. Nor does he resolve the paradox that the same language that he says makes Americans so "democratic" has also made the English themselves "haughty", "oppressive of the Scots", and prone to advertise "their place of education".
In short, this isn't a book I would want to put in the hands of an innocent monolingual American business person heading abroad for the first time. Nor would I recommend it to the students and 'newcomers to the field' for whom it was written.

Honor and Respect

The Blood and Guts is the most inspirational bodybuilding book out there. I have never read a bodybuilding book that emphasizes on honor and respect. If you take out all stories about bodybuilding in this book, you might think it's a book about self-help. "...be honest, be of good character and be a person of your word. Those attributes will take you far."
The book shows the history of Mr.Yates's competition in the competitive world of bodybuilding with photos (more than 50% of the book is photos). It gradually shows the progress of his muscle building. It has some photos of when he began bodybuilding, and it gave me a hope to be the best I can be; he wasn't big at the beginning just like everybody. Mr.Yates believes that you can surpass a bodybuilder of superior genetic and less determination even though you believe you have inferior genetic if you have twice the determination. He believes anybody can go beyond their genetic potential with hard work. So demand the very best of yourself.
Doing things one at a time has been his doctrine of success. He believes a big success is the sum of little successes all combined. I, too, believe this strongly. For example, to grow one inch muscle around your arm, you first have to determine to grow a quarter of an inch.
The only thing I disagree about some bodybuidling technique of the book is that doing quick positive moves. I have injured my shoulder while lifting too fast, and I couldn't work out for a week. I do 2 second positive (muscle contraction) and 4 second negative (muscle release). Doing slow moves have definitely helped me avoid injuries and concentrate more on stimulating my muscle.
Reading this book will not only help you to gain muscle, but also improve yourself as a person.

A no nonsense approach to bodybuilding

I've read several books and magazines by bodybuilding pros who want to voice their training views and opinions. The disapointment with other authors was they just repeated what other bodybuilders wrote. Nothing original. Dorian Yates' approach to bodybuilding is familiar - Mentzer's approach - but superior. I've been following Dorian Yates' career since he was crowned Mr. Olympia. His rate of improvement from year to year is phenomenal. I know some people might say that it just the drugs, I disagree. Yates' philosophy and inner drive is what makes him constantly improve. Today - 1998 - other pros now follow his hardcore, intense approach. In the world of bodybuilding: Yates is the leader and everybody else is a follower. Even though this book was published in 1993 his methods have remained the same. In my opinion, follow someone's advise if it works, if it doesn't ,throw it out! I would recommend this book to only those who are ready to follow an intense program. Wimps not need apply. I read this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. Pick up a copy and you'll see a difference in body, attitude, and desire. "Two thumbs and a lat spread way up!!"

The true meaning of Ultimate Bodybuilding Training Intensity

Dorian Yates is the living & breathing example of true Bodybuilding Training & Intensity. Very few people ever experience such will-power to the point of self-destruction. I can identify with his training intensity as I have lifted weights & semi-pro 'body-built' for the last 20 years. Dorian is such an inspiration to me & his book is THE ultimate in bodybuilding training. Arnold would talk trash but Dorian would let his body do the talking on stage!!! I love it! I saw Dorian guest pose a few years back in Chicago at the Jr USA, I have never seen such an impressive physique. I have never seen such a HUGE, AWESOME bodybuilder in my life! And probably never will again. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning what REAL bodybuilding is. If you can find one of his books available that is. P.S. Buy Dorian's video - You will freak out!!!
