I'd read some of the later books in the series and was glad to learn how it all began, but without the dragons (the best part) it was a bit boring. Still Anne McCaffrey is a wonderful writer and it is well worth reading for the backstory.

I bought the original books in this series over 20 years ago. Some books needed to be replaced due to loaning :( rereading the entire series, and ready to move to Pern and impress a dragon, or even a fire lizard!

About the Author
Gail Dexter Lord is co-founder and co-president of Lord Cultural Resources. With Barry Lord, she is co-editor of The Manual of Museum Planning (1991, 1999, 2012), and co-author of The Manual of Museum Management (1997 and 2009) and Artists, Patrons and the Public: Why Culture Changes (2010). She is co-author with Kate Markert of The Manual of Strategic Planning for Museums (2007). Gail has led cultural and tourism plans for cities as well as planning, management and exhibition assignments for museums, galleries and cities throughout Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, North America and Asia. In 2014, Gail was appointed Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the minister of culture of France.

Ngaire Blankenburg is a principal consultant at Lord Cultural Resources. She has been a youth worker, jazz poet, cartoonist, documentary maker and television producer. She directed the award-winning documentary Morris Fynn Goes Native (SABC), was co-director of Nkosi’s Mission (SABC/BBC) and is co-founder of the Museum of AIDS in Africa. She has advised museum and cultural clients in Washington, DC; Patna, India; Dhahran, Dubai; Beijing, China; and Sydney. Ngaire grew up in Winnipeg, Harare, and Christchurch, and has lived and worked in Johannesburg, Toronto, Paris and Barcelona.

A go-to guide for understanding transits

I have owned this book for years and refer to it often, to help me understand the nature and potential outcome of transiting planets through my chart. My only complaint about this book is the writing style, which tends to be heavy, often negative and at times even morose. Mr. Hand often discusses the negative aspects of transits and doesn't give too much weight to their positive side. While I refer to Planets in Transit for information, the negative context can be off-putting and even annoying. Every transit, no matter how challenging, has a positive side but you wouldn't know it from this book. I would like to see Planets in Transit re-released with more detail about the positive/negative aspects of all of the transits and more guideline-focused descriptions that help the reader know all of the potential energies around aspects so they have more information to help them make choices about the energies they are faced with. That said, it is informative and a good resource for identifying the nature and potential of planetary transits in the natal chart.

Missing 15 pages of Mars content

I just want prospective buyers to be aware: Check your copy for missing pages before its too late to request a replacement copy.

My copy of the paperback book is missing pages 213 to 228. The missing content includes delineations for Mars in all of the houses and for all transits between Mars and the Sun. If I had all the content, I would probably rate this book three or four stars. In the three years that I've owned this book, I have found it useful to read about Robert Hand's perspective about particular transits that I need help understanding.

An Astrological Classic which Belongs on Every Astrologer's Shelf

If you're not quite a professional astrologer but know enough to understand what a "transit" is, then this book is invaluable for you as well. Using the full depth of his experience and talent as a professional astrologer, Rob Hand has written a masterwork that explains what to expect from the various astrological transits. He includes transits forming all Ptolemaic aspects from and to every planet as well as the ascendant and Midheaven. His descriptions are comprehensive and, as you would expect, highly accurate. As a professional astrologer myself I use this as well to augment and confirm my own interpretation and of course it's extremely helpful in assessing my own transits since it's always difficult for an astrologer to read their own chart. This is a definite "must have" for every astrologer or person who avails him or herself to the insights provided by this ancient art.

A founding dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, Allison applies a long, distinguished career in government and academia to this sobering—indeed frightening—presentation of U.S. vulnerability to a terrorist nuclear attack. While he begins by asserting such an attack is preventable, the balance of his text is anything but reassuring. Allison begins by describing the broad spectrum of groups who could intend a nuclear strike against the U.S. They range from an al-Qaeda with its own Manhattan Project to small and determined doomsday cults. Their tools can include a broad spectrum of weapons, either stolen or homemade from raw materials increasingly available worldwide. Once terrorists acquire a nuclear bomb, Allison argues, its delivery to an American target may be almost impossible to stop under current security measures. The Bush administration, correct in waging war against nuclear terrorism, has not, he says, yet developed a comprehensive counter strategy. Arguing that the only way to eliminate nuclear terrorism's threat is to lock down the weapons at the source, Allison recommends nothing less than a new international order based on no insecure nuclear material, no new facilities for processing uranium or enriching plutonium and no new nuclear states. Those policies, Allison believes, do not stretch beyond the achievable, if pursued by a combination of quid pro quos and intimidation in an international context of negotiation and a U.S. foreign policy he describes as "humble." A humble policy in turn will facilitate building a world alliance against nuclear terrorism and acquiring the intelligence necessary for success against prospective nuclear terrorists. It will also require time, money and effort. Like the Cold War, the war on nuclear terrorism will probably be a long struggle in the twilight. But no student of the fact, Allison asserts, doubts that another major terrorist attack is in the offing. "We do not have the luxury," he declares, "of hoping the beast will simply go away."

Allison, who served under the first Clinton administration, models his argument on the successful Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program he helped implement when the Soviet Union collapsed. Nuclear Terrorism, well-written, lucid, and above all horrifying, offers a blueprint for preventing nuclear terrorism. Reviewers generally agree with Allison’s points, but ask how he would implement his goals in politically diverse climates. How does one conduct nuclear power plant inspections with corrupt officials, for example? Allison himself admits that his plan will take a “long, hard, slog”—one that seems necessary.

In essence, he argues that the U.S. government should buy the world's loose fissile metal, negotiate a termination of North Korea's and Iran's bomb projects, and revamp the International Atomic Energy Agency. Don't read this book if you want to sleep soundly every night. I guess we all know of some of the potential risks of the time we are in but to see them quantified is a real eye opener.

Superb on Sounding the Alarm; Uninspiring Solutions

Graham Allison's "Nuclear Terrorism" is the scariest book I have read in a long time. The first 2/3 of the book is a carefully documented and extremely readable demolition of all the myths that might comfort us about why nuclear terrorism is unlikely. It is so well done and so important that before I had finished the copy I borrowed from the library, I bought two more online, including one to send my congressman. Allison has done a great service by calling attention to this urgent problem.

Unfortunately, the last third of the book is disappointing. Rather than call for the worldwide abolition of nuclear weapons, Allison's "solutions" will perpetuate the status quo, with current nuclear powers retaining their nuclear oligopoly. This not only violates Article VI of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty (and hence the U.S. Constitution), it sends a message that we believe the use or the threat of use of nuclear weapons is morally acceptable and militarily useful. This wrong message undermines efforts to prevent proliferation to other countries. In fact, the US would be a big winner if nuclear weapons were abolished. As Bernard Lown, co-founder of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) wrote in 1996:

"One can puzzle with dismay that the industrialized nations are not leading the pack in the quest for nuclear abolition...Their long-range security is categorically undermined by the spread of nuclearism. Nuclear weapons afford them scant advantage as they already command awesome military establishments capable of projecting their might speedily to the remote corners of the earth." In order to galvanize the population of the world to work together to prevent nuclear catastrophe, we need a goal and a message capable of inspiring people. Allison does a great job of sounding the alarm, but IPPNW's goal and message are more inspirational.

The Second Best Account

Even though this readable and compelling book has received a lot of publicity, Ferguson and Potter's "The Four Faces of Nuclear Terrorism" actually provides more in-depth information and more useful analysis. In particular, "Four Faces" offers much more extensive analysis of the radiological weapon and nuclear facility threats, which are far more likely to occur than the nuclear explosions that form Allison's main focus.

Allison ferrets out telling anecdotes and lurid details that illustrate the refractory and yet possibly manageable nature of the threat. I found his accounts of the Chechen and Libyan cases particularly insightful. And one can only concur with his overall arguments about how nuclear terrorism should receive a much higher priority in terms of executive attention and federal spending. So the book offers considerable value as an up-to-date overview for the non-expert reader.

In terms of deeper analysis, although the book covers a wide swathe of international issues, it manages not even to mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. policy toward it. So in a broader sense, the analysis remains merely tactical.
