It's okay...

It's not a terrible book. The problem with it is that as the book goes on, the scenarios become more and more extreme, eventually winding up describing stuff that's either completely bizarre, or simply so over the top that it stops becoming erotica and becomes some kind of S&M Evel Kneivel act. (For example, during one particular scene, all that I could think of was "That poor, poor rattlesnake. What did it ever do to deserve such treatment?")
It's okay, but not one of my favorites.

Non Fiction Book of the Month

Fascinating history of money from the ancient Greeks to today. I give this my non fiction book of the month club award..of course subjective since I'm the only one with a vote. I became interested in economics after the crash of '08 and read what was available on Kindle. I should have started here. It's written almost like a text book with a chapter review after every chapter. Easy to read and not complicated; creates a time-line of how money becomes debased, particulary paper money. Good read for everyone whether interested in economics or not. Certainly should give you something to think about. How debased can currency get? I just bought 5 6 trillion dollar Zimbabwe notes for 5 bucks, make great birthday gifts.

Brilliant Book on the History of Money

Given the title you'd think this is just another book complaining about the Federal Reserve. In reality this book is much more than that. It goes into the History of Money and how it was used in the ancient Mediterranean. There is also a lot of history of the American Revolution including why our currency has the same name as Spanish Currency as opposed to British. Not to mention the dollar was first defined in silver instead of gold.

When it comes to the History of the Depression this book really pulls ahead. You may be surprised at some of the campaign statements made by Roosevelt and the actions of Herbert Hoover. This book also has the actual acts used in the gold confiscation. I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about the economic history of the U.S.

Weak, needed a better editor and reviewer

Unfortunetly, while there is much solid research within this book, the modern interpretation and analysis is too often manipulated to fit the preconceived conceptual narrative arc. Hageman does a good job in summarizing earlier material on this subject, but there are dozens of glaring minor errors that compund to create a false history. For example, the section on the Iron Cross medal is a rewriting of earlier books, notably Williamson and Boelke, but then degenerated into nonsense as the author attempted to cram factoids into her analytical template. To be very clear, the battle bars she ascribes to the iron cross award were in fact for the Prussian vampaign medal, were privately purchased and only the certificates allowing their wear were awarded by the federal Chancellory. Ascribing these bars as an example of promoting the nationalist symbol of Prussian glory is simply wrong. In fact, these bars were a direct result of lobbying by the Officers' Associations following a series of articles in the Militaerwochenblatt about British campaign medals and their iconic " battle bars". A small thing to be sure, but the lobbyists directly appealed to Germanys's rising sense of nascent world power status in their appeals (" We must adopt the British example in this matter, for to do less implies we are less and our beloved old soldiers are not worthy" etc.) . The campaign medals were imperial awards, not Prussian ones and that spoke volumes in Wilhelmenian Germany, as their precedence directly demonstrated dominant political power was located in Berlin, not elsewhere. This is just one example, but I can list dozens of other errors and misinterpretations.

Good Information and Reference

I good resource whether you are planning for retirement or already retired. Some of the charts are complicated to the layman, but the author does try to simplify complicated material. I would recommend reading it before retirement then sit down with a financial planner so that you can write down the areas you want to discuss that are confusing. Even retirees will benefit from reading various sections of the book i.e. chapters re: social security and tax implications. I did go to several planners before I retired, made my decisions which were sound, but I still bought the book after I retired. It took me a couple hours to read it - now I have a few questions for my financial planner this quarter. It will now be in my bookcase for future reference.

This book is well worth the cost. It is informative and give you a good idea of where to start. It is ideal for a fresh out of the academy rookie and the one day away salty veteran. I highly recommend this book to all members of the department.

I recommend this book.

Although this is meant for young teens, I found Gilman's philosophy sprinkled throughout the book. It's really too bad this is no longer being printed. I think this would be an excellent book to read with your child and discuss. So many ideas to bat around. Very positive read. Very unusual fantasy novel.

The Maze in the Heart of the Castle

This is a very good book by Gilman. It ties in to "The Tightrope Walker" which was actually written first. This one should, however, be read first. I highly recommend both books for people who like to suspend disbelief when reading. Entertaining reading.

A rich adventure for youth

This is an intelligent, exciting, message-full adventure in the style of the Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time etc. and the like. The lessons are a bit heavily stated, from an adult perspective, but not syrupy. I got this book because I'm a great fan of Gillman's Tightrope Walker (in which this book is mentioned), Incident at Badamya, and Caravan--great adult thought-provokers.
