Craig Watkins examines two of the most important developments in the recent history of black cinema -- the ascendancy of Spike Lee and the proliferation of "ghettocentric films" like Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society. Representing explores a distinct contradiction in American society: at the same time that black youth have become the targets of a fierce racial backlash against crime, drugs, affirmative action, and rap music, their popular expressive cultures have become highly visible and commercially viable.

Further, Watkins considers the imprint of black youth on the landscape of black filmmaking. He asks: after decades of neglect, why did the film industry suddenly develop a heightened interest in black cinema? Watkins shows how the black film wave was driven by several factors -- the transformation of the popular film industry; a reinvigorated independent filmmaking niche; the cross-marketing of music, video, and film; a burgeoning hip hop consumer culture; and historically specific struggles over the meanings and representations of "blackness" in American culture. He contends that despite social and economic marginalization, black youth have gained unprecedented access to the popular media and continue to influence not only black popular culture but the broader U.S. popular culture scene as well.

This is a Book that will teach you 3d, From origin to cool timelines. basic concepts and goes advanced from there HOWEVER there is a new version coming out. the 3rd edition will be out later this year. Maybe you want to wait for that one since it will be completley updated :) It is Teaching me much, as other's Have said it is not a tutorial book. But I personally think if you want to actually Learn 3d animation you have to know the Concepts not just How to Follow Directions. Also A little Side note learn how to draw if you don't yet. If this is your dream arm yourself with every aspect of it. Traditional and 3d. It Can't possible hurt to know as much as you Can. Good Luck.

One of the best books to get if you are in the field of CG

Mr. Kerlow has written an excellent fundamentals book that hits the target for beginners who are trying to get a grasp of the scope of CG and a great reference book for veterans as well. The book takes the big picture view of the field and gives great examples of technique and theory as well as the down and dirty uses in the field. If you are starting out in CG, a seasoned veteran or just curious about the field of digital animation this is the first book to purchase.

highly over-rated

I think this book is highly over-rated. I found the tiny font very hard to read and the screen captures look like they were made several application generations ago. For my money I'd get something like 3D Animation: From Models to Movies by Watkins or digital 3d design by Danaher.
If they updated this book to reference software that people are actually using today and made the font bigger then I think it might merit a higher ranking.

I've read it five times............what more can I say?!

The novel gripped me from the start. Maria and Gabriel were a delightful couple whose struggle until they realised their love for one another, captivated me. The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns. I think what I liked most about this novel, was that it did not end when they realised that they loved eachother. Too often, romance novels do, and one is left with a feeling of frustration, of wanting to know what happened after their declaration of love! The Spanish Rose is not like that, and one can contentedly go on to read further, and enjoy the extra twists and turns that Shirlee has in store! This was an EXCELLENT novel, and I recommend it to all romantics out there - if you are reading this, and haven't read it yet - why waste time...READ!

Passionate and sweeping romance

This type of romance book is not very common in today's romance, and was written during a time (70s, 80s, and even into the early 90s) when certain elements of romance were more common: the harsh alpha male hero and "forced seductions" (in other words, borderline rape scenes) were the norm. Nothing wrong with this type of romance, it has its own unique charm and in some ways I enjoy reading these older romances more than ones written by today's authors.

I have found that the historical romances written during this time period were very detailed and that the authors researched into the history of the setting of their stories (another author that comes to mind was Kathleen E. Woodiwiss). This is the 2nd Shirlee Busbee book I've read and the author did an incredible job in laying the background of what was occurring politically between England and Spain and their colonies in the New World.

The story is set in 1664-1668 and takes place mostly in the islands of the Caribbean. There are pirates, raiding, and fighting, and while reading The Spanish Rose it really did bring to mind swashbuckling pirates and captive damsels in distress. The descriptions of the battles between the English buccaneers and the Spaniards and the lush tropical islands of the Caribbean were vividly described that I could almost picture the scenes in my mind.

The hero, Gabriel Lancaster, is captured by the heroine's brother, Diego Delgato, during a fight at sea in which his young wife is killed and his sister taken captive. He is made a slave on the Delgato plantation on Santa Domingo for a year before he escapes where he later joins the Brethren of the Coast, a band of English pirates and plans his revenge. His revenge involves using the heroine, Maria Delgato, to strike back and he waits and bides his time. When he finally gets a hold of Maria, his plans for revenge backfire as he finds himself falling for his captive.

I really enjoyed this book, but the hero, Gabriel Lancaster, and the heroine, Maria Delgato could get really frustrating at times. The hero and heroine fought a lot throughout the book, and their desire for each other and determination not to give in could get tiring at times. I could understand that there was bitterness and hatred between the English Lancasters and Spanish Delgatos (all stemming from an event 100 years in the past!), but I felt the hero and heroine were too stubborn in their pride in not admitting to themselves how they truly felt for one another. They bicker, fight, make up until almost the very end of the book when they finally can no longer deny their love.

Despite the character flaws of the hero and heroine, I'd still recommend reading this book, the emotions and thoughts behind the characters were fully fleshed out and there was no question behind their behaviors and actions. Not to mention, the incredible richness of the scenery and setting of the story more than made up for the small annoyances I had with the hero and heroine.

Good, not great - 2.5 stars

This romance novel started out well enough. The beginning chapters of this novel, up to the hero, Gabriel's, escape from slavery on Maria's family plantation, are the best part. When Maria becomes Gabriel's "slave" in turn, it's so silly. For one, Gabriel keeps feeling guilty for making her work, AND keeps taking the work out of her hands, preferably so he can get her into bed. He also has these intrusive servants who keep poking their noses into his business with Maria, too. Maria just became a little sappy as the book went on. The romance between the two of them is just strong enough to keep you reading, but I really prefered Busbee's "The Tiger Lily" over this book.

Rare Ford motor information

The repro of the Bill Carrolls Ford Performance manual is outstanding, I had lost my original several years ago and have looked all over for one until I logged on to the Amazon site looking for it. this manual is the only one that gives All the breakdowns on all the motors Ford had built in that time period and since I own a couple of old Ford muscle cars, this manual is just what the Ford Doctor ordered. I am glad that Amazon had EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Not all V8s

Beware the product description - this is not a book "For all Ford V8 owners and restorers...". It completely misses the first 3 decades of Ford V8s (no flathead or Y-block info at all). It only goes back to the '62 Windsor 221. It's still a good read, but not nearly as comprehensive as the product description implies.

The stocker's bible

This book is from about 1971, so it does not have a complete history of blocks since then. But what it does have can come in pretty handy at times when trying to figure out orginal motor configurations. not alot of Cleveland info.
