Disappointing!
By Firas Hnoosh
I was very excited at first when I bought this book. It's full of nice illustrations and examples, but I was very disappointed when I finished reading it. It's very general with no structural orientation. It does not serve as a guide on how to design and develop your portfolio and just mentions general common knowledge which, as an architecture student or professional, you can learn throughout college and work.

I would not recommend it for those who want to create a portfolio with strong impact.

Not a step-by-step guide
By Amazon Customer
If you want to be inspired and gain a new prespective on how to design an architectural portfolio, this is an excellent book.

Not the step-by-step guide, or a list of creative ideas, it allows for creativity along with both basic and detailed pointers on layout, overall design, content and award-recipent portfolio examples. Direct references to certain colleges in both Europe and the USA.

Something not in the description that was a very pleasent surprise: The authors compare UK schools and USA schools, their application process and how the portfolios differ. A very useful thing for a student, such as myself, planning on applying to both European and USA architecture grad. schools.

Disappointing and Vague
By Alex Powell
Just like another person's review, I was very excited about the book. After reading, I felt like I just wasted my time! The book is very generalized and NOT STEP BY STEP as it reads on the back cover. Half the book also dicusses the professional architectural culture in the UK(wasting my time!). It is a good book that inspires to have a good portfolio, but no help on how to make it!

Iranian art of the Qajar period (1779-1925) has long been neglected and is little understood. This beautifully illustrated book for the first time comprehensively examines the flowering of Persian painting and the visual arts of this period. It focuses on the growth of a remarkable tradition of life-size figural painting, virtually unseen in the Islamic world. Exquisite historic manuscripts, lacquer works, calligraphies and enamels further illuminate the subject. The Qajar Epoch carries essays by leading scholars exploring the historical and social context of the period. Detailed entries describing and interpreting a wide variety of painting and artifacts, many hitherto unseen masterpieces from museums such as the Hermitage and private collections are virtually all illustrated in color and accompanied by translations of inscriptions, technical appendices and extensive bibliographies. A unique reference work, The Qajar Epoch will appeal to both specialist of pre-modern Iran and all those interested in non-Western artistic and cultural traditions.

Magnificient book
By A Customer
This book is the best about the Iranian Qajar history I've ever seen. The unknown paintings, genealogical tables, beautiful design: all this makes it very important in understanding the great culture not only of Qajar but also of Zand, Afsharid and Safavid epochs. I wish there were more such books in the great world of not only iranian but of whole world's royalty.

I use this book with my students to increase their vocabulary repertoire, and I find it very helpful for that purpose. However, I wish the lessons were more authentic and meaningful, as this would it easier for students to internalize the vocabulary words. Required book for kids school, what else can you say
By C
Had to buy it for the kid's english class. If you need a vocabulary book that is required by the school then it is great. If you're looking to enjoy reading it then don't buy it.

Terrible - skips important functions, and no mid-ground
By bookwormy2
I bought this book hoping to learn from scratch - as one would assume you can normally do from a "For Dummies" book. I own 12 "For Dummies" books on various subjects, but this has by far been the most scattered in flow and difficult to process.
While the book exhausts you with lengthy dissertations on all of the possible variable types before you even get to write anything useful, it then completely leaves out the really useful information and techniques like how to write a program that can save text output into a separate file. There is no CD included, leaving you to have to go to the author's website and download all of the support files you'll need to cover your topics of interest. While I did find a "bonus" chapter on the author's website that covered creating programs that read from and write to text files, the code he published with it had errors and would not compile.
Finally, I say there is no "mid ground" because it seems he can only take you along at either 5mph or 200mph - there isn't much in-between. There is a lot of "we'll cover that later" (my quotes) but it doesn't get covered in time to help you understand what he's discussing just a few pages later.
BIG disappointment. I'm now looking for another tutorial source on C#.

Club that beats the dead horse...
By H. T. Roberts
I'm not saying this was a bad book. It just didn't jive with me, and I don't feel like I got very far with it. This book is the club that beats the proverbial dead horse. At times, I felt like I was taking the beating.

I am a total beginner, and the first sections were very useful in understanding basic concepts of programming in general. I'm still reading it, but it's draining me of motivation to write any more code. After a couple of months, I'm not a whole lot better at writing code. I definitely understand it better, however I not DOING much better.

Flavors upon flavors of a little thing seem to be the overiding theme of this book. I was really looking for a more general overview and snippets that would help catapult me into writing more complex code than what is presented.

This book may be an ideal supplement with another book, or books. It may even be a good reference when you're running into trouble understanding concepts of C# programming. The detail IS there. I was looking for snippets that I could actually use for very low level apps I'm trying to write. I guess I didn't need to buy a book for that. I was a fool, and my money soon parted from me.

Good But Could be Better
By Daniel E. Hofford
It must be something in our culture that causes writers of technical information to not 'get it' when they are explaining technical issues. This is a good book, relative to books on C# but there is still too much of the assumption of a lot of C# books that one is coming from a C or C++ background.

I should think any book on this subject would spend the first chapter(s) on giving one an overall architectural picture of the product. EVERYTHING (almost) in C# is a class yet it's not until Chapter 7 that we even begin to deal with the idea of a class. Everyone seems to think the most important thing in explaining code is to get you to write 'Hello World.' It isn't. Doing so before having any idea of what is going on or why is an exercise in aping. Instead of the 'here's a piece, here's a piece, here's a piece of it and I hope you can stitch together the fabric that allows it all to work' approach, I'd like to see an overall architectural picture laid out and then the pieces filled in. That's how I learn. A philosopher (Mortimer Adler) once wrote a book on how to read a book. The idea was to read all the chapter headings, then the table of contents. Then one would flip through the book reading all of what was in bold. The idea was to build the overall architecture of the book in one's mind to have something to hang the details on. Most 'programming language' writers start right off with detail after detail after detail until one has a mountain of detail to sort through and make sense of but still no overall theme with which to do the job. I'm really not picking on the two authors of this book: they simply are doing what everyone in the industry seems to do but it's annoying as hell.

One other small point is that every time something is explained the author(s) should make an attempt to put it in context and to use contextually relevant examples. Take the chapter on collections. People coming from a background of database languages may not have ever had to use or think of a 'hash table' so to use the idea to define a 'dictionary' (which in the database world is quite a different thing) is to leave those readers out in the cold. It's not that it can't be figured out but why should I have to expend great amounts of energy trying to figure out what the author is saying when with a sentence or two it could have been very clear? And then to the lack of context when discussing 'collections.' How are these things used? In what context? What distinguishes the use of a list from an array from a dictionary from a hash table? Nothing. What about data persistence? Nothing. What about dealing with 10 million records? Nothing.

But the reason I gave it three stars instead of four was the all too often occurrence of "I don't explain this here, if you want to know what I'm talking about you have to go to the bonus chapter on the website." Ah, a bonus! I should be grateful, right? Instead I'm annoyed at the assumption I'll be reading this book whilst sitting next to a computer. With internet access. It's irritating even when I am sitting next to one with access. If you're going to deal with a topic, deal with it in one place. Separate the book from the website material so it doesn't interfere with the flow of reading. The way it's been done here I feel like I'm constantly tripping over incomplete information. Bonus material should be on top of, in addition to, not critical to your understanding but put somewhere else.

Other than that, I liked the book.

The Ocean Dark: A Novel, by Jack Rogan, Christopher Golden

The Ocean Darkis a riveting novel of suspense from Christopher Golden, author ofTin Men, written under the pseudonym Jack Rogan.

In the uncharted waters of the Caribbean, far from the usual shipping lanes, lies a mysterious island surrounded by a graveyard of sunken ships—an island so remote that it’s the perfect rendezvous point for a handful of Central American arms dealers and the Antoinette, a gun-smuggling cargo ship out of Miami. Amid the wreckage of ships new and old, the crew of the Antoinette—and the undercover FBI agent on board—enter what looks like a haven for modern pirates, only to discover that it hides something far more terrifying.

In Washington, two Department of Defense scientists might understand what is about to happen. On an FBI ship monitoring the Antoinette’s illegal trade, armed agents might be able to intervene. But this assumes that the Antoinette’s crew survives their first encounter with a creature virtually unknown to man, yet whose eerie songs nevertheless echo down the corridors of mankind’s darkest legends.

Couldn't stop reading
By J Wilson
At first, I was very irritated every time a new chapter started with a new central character in a totally different location. But each chapter was so well written that I would quickly be caught up learning about each new person. Also, the relocations, while abrupt, gave me an opportunity to recover from the intense action of the previous chapters. Golden as
Rogan doesn't waste a single word or description. Everything in every location illuminates the thinking and drive of each, critically vital character. If you like action, science, dedication, and an enemy too terrifying to say this is an adventure story, then this book is for you and you will be as disappointed as I am to have to leave these people at the end of the book. I hope he will write more SOON.

After a winter going through all of James Lee Burkes books, a Spring full of Lee Childs and a few of David Baldacci, Steve Berry and James Rollins in between. I enjoyed this book more than most of them, What A wild ride it was, Gun Runners, FBI, US Navy, Coast Guard, and the ever frightening "sirens" this book ran the gamut. If you need a thrill ride down the escapism highway, Read This Book!
Can't believe that there aren't more reviews on this one.
Hard to imagine that this is Rogans' first book. Hope to see many more!

Scary Read That Makes Me Think Twice About My Love of the Sea
By Ken Mcwilliams
Christopher Golden has written a novel about aquatic horrors that would give Peter Benchley nightmares. H.P. Lovecraft is surely smiling in the void beyond time, knowing that another author has taken on the responsibility to keep readers horrified, yet intrigued, of what lies beneath the "ocean dark."

Going to the Dogs: The Story of a Moralist (New York Review Books Classics), by Erich Kastner

Going to the Dogs is set in Berlin after the crash of 1929 and before the Nazi takeover, years of rising unemployment and financial collapse. The moralist in question is Jakob Fabian, “aged thirty-two, profession variable, at present advertising copywriter . . . weak heart, brown hair,” a young man with an excellent education but permanently condemned to a low-paid job without security in the short or the long run.

What’s to be done? Fabian and friends make the best of it—they go to work though they may be laid off at any time, and in the evenings they go to the cabarets and try to make it with girls on the make, all the while making a lot of sharp-sighted and sharp-witted observations about politics, life, and love, or what may be. Not that it makes a difference. Workers keep losing work to new technologies while businessmen keep busy making money, and everyone who can goes out to dance clubs and sex clubs or engages in marathon bicycle events, since so long as there’s hope of running into the right person or (even) doing the right thing, well—why stop?

Going to the Dogs, in the words of introducer Rodney Livingstone, “brilliantly renders with tangible immediacy the last frenetic years [in Germany] before 1933.” It is a book for our time too.

Review
“Kstner (1899-1974) had a message to convey about the crumbling of Berlin's moral standards, and he delivered it successfully….but it is Fabian himself who explains things best when he comments ironically, ‘We live in stirring times . . . and they get more stirring every day.'’” —Publishers Weekly

“Like his hero Fabian, Kstner was not a cynic as a saddened idealist; the two conditions look much the same, but the latter is more painful….Fabian is a "key novel" of the Weimar Republic in its last years. It is a notably efficient novel, with little of the metaphysical resonance of [Thomas Mann’s] Doctor Faustus or that book’s soul-searching, but offering instead a series of moral tableaux, rendered the cooler by the chapter titles, in the form of newspaper headings.” —The Times Literary Supplement

“Graceful, vivid and distinguished…a little masterpiece of pathos and calamity.” —Michael Sadleir

“Damned for its improper subject-matter, [Going to the Dogs] showed the crumbling Berlin of Christopher Isherwood’s stories with something of Isherwood’s sharp intelligence, but a far more tragic sense of implication.” —The Times Literary Supplement

“I am a great admirer of Fabian [original title] and have read it at least twice.” —Graham Greene

About the Author
Erich Kstner (1899–1974) was born in Dresden and after serving in World War I studied history and philosophy in Leipzig, completing a PhD. In 1927 he moved to Berlin and through his prolific journalism quickly became a major intellectual figure in the capital. His first book of poems was published in 1928, as was the children’s book Emil and the Detectives, which quickly achieved worldwide fame. Going to the Dogs appeared in 1931 and was followed by many other
works for adults and children, including Lottie and Lisa, the basis for the popular Disney film The Parent Trap. In 1933 the pacifist Kstner was banned from German publication and subsequently found employment as a film scriptwriter. After World War II, he worked as a literary editor and continued to write, mainly for children.

Cyrus Brooks translated works by Alfred Neumann, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, and Leonhard Frank as well as Kstner’s Emil and the Detectives, Emil and the Three Twins, and Lottie and Lisa.

Rodney Livingstone is a professor emeritus in German studies at the University of Southampton and a translator of books by Theodor W. Adorno, Max Weber, and Walter Benjamin, among others. In 2009 he was awarded the Ungar German Translation Prize of the American Translators Association.

A Chilling View of Weimar Berlin
By garwood
Erich Kastner (1899-1974) is perhaps best known for his children's books, especially the much translated, `Emil and The Detectives'; and through film adaptations of `Lottie and Lisa', the source of Walt Disney's, `The Parent Trap'.

However in `Going to the Dogs' (published as `Fabian', in 1931), Kastner probes the hopelessness, intrigue, and degeneration of Weimar Germany.

Most vivid here is that particular Weimar sense of purposelessness and restlessness which generated (in many) an intense, desperate, seeking. The German concept `sehnsucht' (lit. yearning-addiction), comes to mind. One clearly feels the frustrated longing for what isn't, and perhaps what can not be.

After defeat in 1918, Germany plunged into turmoil which didn't end until Hitler. People were adrift: authority, institutions, and cultural norms lost their force. Dire economic circumstances contributed to a breakdown of structures, engendering vast social and cultural disintegration.

Setting aside its disastrous ending, some very fine art, music, and literature arose (Kurt Weil comes to mind), of which Kastner's work is an important part. Although this novel is little known, it is very much worth reading, especially with (and for) an historical awareness.

One could argue `Going to the Dogs' is not truly a novel, but a series of set pieces, episodes tied together by its protagonist, Jacob Fabian, (likely, in part, Kastner himself), and the city of Berlin. Its best read not for plot, or even character, but for the vital sense of time, place, and milieu it conveys - along with its timeless depictions of flawed human nature.

We meet hypocritical newspaper editors, prostitutes (male and female), naive activists, opportunists, politically enraged drunks shooting pistols, a detached father and absent mother, a depraved husband, a malignantly jealous academic - all in an atmosphere of abundant alcohol and hyper-charged sexuality.

Yet Fabian is not as unaware, or lost (or detached) as he may first seem. Largely, he's a sympathetic character: decent, and oddly enough, a somewhat conservative moralist whom we understand even better now, knowing what was to come.

No, Kastner is not as charming as Zweig, or as polished as Joseph Roth, or as psychologically astute as Schnitzler, but he does provide a unique and invaluable insight, conveyed with a Viennese intensity: a significant of-the-period view of Weimar Berlin, a place where, "Life is a chance, death is a certainty."

*********

Three final points:

The cover art (Christian Schad's `Self Portrait With Model', 1927) is intriguing (note the title block obscures the woman's breast - an unintentional allusion to the censorship of the original edition?) And although we might visualize Fabian as looking like Schad, the grittier art of either Otto Dix of George Grosz might have been more fitting.

Also, a book this important could use a fresh translation as this British-English rendition is at times clumsy. Anthea Bell`s recent translations of Stefan Zweig are light, engaging, and models of clarity: NYRB should have used her talents here as well.

Finally, Rodney Livingstone's introduction is thoughtful and informative, but as is all too common in NYRB titles, its too revealing and should be read as an afterward.

Going to the Dogs: The Story of a Moralist
By Jared Branch
Erich Kastner lived in that seminal time between World Wars in which so much of modern literature is based. Training to be a teacher, his studies were interrupted when he volunteered for the first and, living in Switzerland during the outbreak of the second, he returned to Germany, now during its Third Reich, with grandiose ideas of novelizing the war. At one point he attended his own book burning. He took up with the school of "New Objectivity" that, borne in response to the mass society, found solace in the idea of the individual in much the same way that modern society, increasingly free of disease and hunger, shuns vaccinations and the mass production of food as a return to its humanity, even if this morally base state leaves us wanting.

Going to the Dogs take place in the Weimar Republic, shortly before its fall. Kastner's angry but also apathetic with the society in which he finds himself. The crux of his anger is articulated through the editor of the newspaper who invents news, slaughters men without concern, influences opinion (or, "the most convenient...the public lack of all opinion"), and is "too respectable" to support the government. Society is failing, politically and economically, not because of the "present (economic) crisis", but because of the "spiritual sloth" that underlies it. In his 1950s preface he bemoans that "people nowadays understand even less" because society is "inoculating the masses with new standardized opinions." The idea that our knowledge isn't our own brings up an interesting point; how do we form our own judgments? How - and why - do we know whatever it is we know? How do we separate that which is didactic from that which is dogmatic?

Fabian, fictionalized Kastner, is an ascetic, living a Spartan lifestyle; to him, even coffee is sweet. He "cultivate(s) mixed emotions as a hobby" and is "melancholic, so nothing much can happen" to him, although when he finally attempts to better society it ends so poorly that the results are absurd. It's interesting that, while shunning everything sweet, the writing is full of treacly, moralizing dialogue. In each chapter he attempts to go out on a high note. Like other lesser authors, Kastner is incapable of listing his qualms with society in any way except explicitly, through stilted and unnatural dialogue, that leaves nothing to the reader and nothing ambiguous in which one can find their own meaning or ascribe their own importance.

Given that this was written in 1930s Germany, it should come as no surprise that Freudian psychology figures prominently. One man, describing the sexual proclivities of his wife at which we are supposed to balk, says that their marriage "produced wish-dreams of whose content, my dear sir, you can, happily, form no conception." While both genders are overly sexualized (this is, after all, "satire"), it's only women who are judged for their deviance. And while women run brothels full of men, "people were sauntering past along the pavements without any idea of the crazy things that happened behind the house-fronts." Any semblance to permanence is only an illusion, as houses catch fire during the night because of defects in their construction.

How well can a work of satire concerned with 1930s morals hope to age? It is an interesting dynamic that a book on morals belies the idea as conceptualized by a modern, educated world. In dealing with morals the question always arises of whose, exactly, morals they are to be. That NYRB chose to re-release this now speaks to their belief that history repeats or, at a minimum, educates. So when the newspaper editor laments that the country is falling "into the hands of foreigners" or that "the state bolsters up the bankrupt landowners" and dares not impose taxes on the rich, you're apt, if you're of a certain mindset, to attempt to make parallels. We like to believe that events are causal and to find meaning in words. But there are just events, and it's humans that make those into stories. So, while we should be wary not only of Kastner's prescriptions on morality, we should be wary too of the idea that history forms some grand narrative through which we can learn.

A book for Voyeurs
By John Mccarthy
For anyone who might want to catch an understanding of the free-fall culture within the educated elite in Berlin during the waning years of the Weimar Republic, this book is a feast.

Fundamentally, the book consists of a series of episodes experienced by its protagonist, Fabian. As such, it speaks to his and to his cultures emptiness, restlessness and meaninglessness.

Life, in that period, the author sees to say, was no more or no less than a series of off-beat experiences, mostly sexual, that lead nowhere.

In the book, at least as I read it, there was no growth, no coherence, no learning, no climactic event...but rather just one lost and relatively joyless experience after another.

And, yet, at some level the book satisfies...for Fabian, who is the 'string' that connects all these dead-end experiences, is a sympathetic creature, lost to be sure, but likable just the same.
