Good Story

Georgie and Nina are best friends with one major difference. Georgie has long known she never wants kids and relishes the freedom that life choice brings. Nina on the other hand wants nothing more than to be a mother. Married for several years she and her husband have endured the rollercoaster of IVF with no success and it has taken its toll on their relationship. Deciding that she can't go through the torturous process again Nina and Georgie go out drinking one night and with her inhibitions lowered Nina asks her friend if she will be her surrogate.

Nobody is more surprised than Georgie herself when she reluctantly agrees to do the ultimate favour for her best friend. But as often happens in life things don't go quite as smoothly as planned, leading the two women on a journey that tests their friendship and teaches them surprising things about themselves. Georgie is hard to like at times and I can't say I really grew to enjoy her character. I don't know that she was as fully developed as she could have been, although she was realistic enough.

Although She's Having Her Baby explores the heartbreaking theme of infertility it does so in a way that includes many light hearted and humorous moments. Those who have been through pregnancy will relate to the cravings and unwelcome changes it brings to your body and those who haven't will gain some insight into what it is all about. The description of some of the mothers in the playground is funny but perhaps a little cliched.

All in all this is an enjoyable story with some surprising plot twists that kept it more interesting than the blurb suggests. I will say I enjoyed it more as it went along. The writing is good with an engaging style and the dialogue is natural and authentic for the characters. I also enjoyed the contemporary Australian setting. It is a promising debut for Lauren Sams and will no doubt appeal to those who enjoy an engaging chick lit novel.

Such a fab debut novel, funny and heartwarming. Ms Sam deals with a heart rending topic with a deft, light touch, the dialogue and characters fairly spring to life on the pages. Look forward to reading more from this clever new voice.

Nicely paced detective and horror novel.

I've read a lot of Masterton's books in the past and I've always been impressed by his talent and writing skill—very impressed with that. I found his writing talent inspirational and instructive. White Bones is the first of his books I've read in quite a while. It is a gripping, harrowing, sometimes horrifying novel of suspense with a touch of the supernatural thrown in. The novel holds your interest—sometimes by force. It is a detective novel and that was what I was expecting. It turned out to be something more. It has a strong dose of horror thrown in that surprised me, and he turned the horror on strong. And the horror, for me, was a little hard to take; in fact, a bit overpowering, repulsive even, for my taste. But I shouldn't have been surprised. I'm familiar with several of his past novels and remember how he really notched up the horror in them. This novel shows he can still get the job done.

Excellent story

White Bones is the first book by Graham Masterton that I've read.

Mr. Masterton weaves a story in such a way you can't put the book down. I spent the entire day reading it. I can usually figure out the Who Done It, in most books, BUT not in this one, Mr. Masterton knows how to keep one guessing. I was astounded in the end.

This book is amazing twists, turns and unexpected outcomes.
Trying to piece it together I didn't know where it was leading until it got there, really kept me going.
A very good read.

Inexpensive Yet Thorough Introduction to Accounting

I had earned an essentially useless master's degree in another field and was thinking of switching to the field of accounting; I decided to buy the text to test the waters. This text is old enough that one can purchase a used copy for a very reasonable price but it is new enough that it still contains accurate information. It does an excellent job of defining essential accounting terms. It contains many examples and charts to facilitate learning. I recommend it for anyone thinking of switching professions.

Not even an answer key to the exercises

The book is easy to understand, but there should be a solutions manual, or at least an answer key to the exercises. It has been very difficult for me to "learn the mechanics" and "apply the concepts" at the end of each chapter. The pace of the course allows the teacher to solve only 2 or 3 exercises in class, and the book certainly does not make selfstudy easy. Needless to say, that you can't learn financial accounting just by reading. To makes things even worse, a study guide, which does not refer to the same exercises in the book, is out of print.

Good book for non-accountants

Back in the early 90's I took Professor Pratt's class when he was on loan to the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern. His book had not yet been published but he gave all of us copies of the manuscript for the course. So..I needed to replace that version since it had long since fallen apart. This book is great for non-accountants who wish to enhance their understanding of annual reports and interpretation skills. As anyone who has glanced through an annual report can attest, they are not terribly straightforward in identifying changes in the financial status of a company that are less than flattering. They tend to 'accentuate the positive.' Jamie Pratt teaches how to see through these reports to more accurately assess a company's financial condition. Don't expect to be spoon fed by reading this book. Like any complex system, becoming proficient requires study and understanding of fundamental concepts. If you are willing to commit some time, this book will provide the necessary tools.
